SAP ABAP Lead 

 

Job Summary 

The SAP ABAP Lead is responsible for leading the development team, ensuring high-quality technical solutions, and driving best practices in custom development during the SAP S/4HANA program. The role oversees design, development, and delivery of ABAP-based enhancements, interfaces, reports, conversions, workflows, and Fiori/UI5 extensions. The ABAP Lead also acts as the technical quality gatekeeper, ensuring all developments align with SAP standards, performance benchmarks, and project timelines. 

 

Key Process & Technical Knowledge 

The SAP ABAP Lead must have strong expertise in: 

  • SAP S/4HANA ABAP on HANA programming model (CDS Views, AMDP, Core Data Services). 

  • ABAP RAP (Restful ABAP Programming) for modern application development. 

  • OData Services integration for Fiori apps. 

  • Enhancements & User Exits / BAdIs / BTEs. 

  • SmartForms, Adobe Forms, and SAP Script. 

  • Data Migration & Conversion programs (LSMW, BAPIs, IDOCs, BDCs). 

  • Interface Development (ALE, IDOCs, Web Services, RFC, CPI integration points). 

  • Performance Tuning and Optimization for HANA. 

  • Unit Testing & Code Quality Assurance (ATC, SCI, Code Inspector). 

  • SAP Transport Management System (TMS) and change control procedures. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Lead the ABAP development team, assigning and reviewing tasks. 

  • Translate functional requirements into technical specifications. 

  • Ensure high-quality custom objects are delivered on time. 

  • Drive adoption of S/4HANA ABAP best practices (CDS, RAP, Fiori extensions). 

  • Conduct technical design reviews and code walkthroughs. 

  • Collaborate with Functional Leads, Solution Architects, and Integration teams. 

  • Guide the team on performance optimization and debugging techniques. 

  • Ensure compliance with security, audit, and performance guidelines. 

  • Support cutover activities and ensure readiness of all developments for go-live. 

  • Provide mentorship to junior developers and foster knowledge sharing. 

  • Act as point of escalation for all ABAP development issues. 

 

Required Qualifications & Skills 

Education & Certifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field. 

  • SAP ABAP Certification (preferred). 

Experience 

  • 10+ years of SAP ABAP development experience. 

  • At least 2 full-cycle S/4HANA implementations in a Lead role. 

  • Strong exposure to Finance, Procurement, HR, and Logistics modules. 

  • Hands-on experience with ABAP on HANA & RAP framework. 

Technical Skills 

  • Strong debugging, performance tuning, and problem-solving abilities. 

  • Expertise in Fiori/UI5 extensions and CPI/PI/PO interfaces. 

  • Knowledge of modern DevOps practices in SAP (gCTS, CI/CD pipelines). 

Soft Skills 

  • Strong leadership and team management skills. 

  • Excellent communication and coordination with cross-functional teams. 

  • Ability to balance technical depth with project delivery timelines. 

  • Mentorship and capability-building mindset.
