As a Crew Leader for the Stormwater Department, you manage a team, coordinate equipment, and run the sites throughout Sarasota County.   • Coordinate and oversee daily work activities of crews performing stormwater maintenance on county property, rights-of-way, and easements.
  • Supervise and lead staff including Equipment Operators, Skilled Trades Workers, and Trades Workers.
  • Plan and manage daily maintenance operations for Sarasota County drainage conveyance systems.
  • Safely operate and perform basic maintenance on heavy equipment (e.g., Gradall, dump trucks, skid steers, excavators, loaders).
  • Perform and train staff on equipment operation, small-engine repairs, and use of hand, power, and pneumatic tools.
  • Execute duties consistent with Skilled Trades Worker (Landscape Worker), including operation of smaller equipment (chainsaws, pole saws, blowers, trucks, trailers).
  • Interpret and follow diagrams, maps, blueprints, and written instructions for maintenance and landscaping tasks.
  • Perform right-of-way maintenance tasks such as ditch excavation, culvert work, grading, tree trimming, stormwater upkeep, and minor hardscape repairs.

Work Hours:  Monday – Friday,  6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  *On-Call Required.
 

About You

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • A High School Diploma or its equivalent.
  • One year of experience in construction, maintenance and repair of stormwater conveyance systems in/or around road rights-of-ways, county owned property and easements.
  • A valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire. 
  • Must acquire Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker “N” endorsement at the time of hire.
  • Ability to obtain an Intermediate Temporary Traffic Control certification within twelve (12) months at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possession of a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker “N” endorsement.
  • Four (4) years of advanced experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of stormwater conveyance systems in/or around road rights-of-ways, county owned property and easements.
  • Operation of front-end loader, dump truck, excavators, personal computers, and mechanical tools used in the stormwater industry. 

    Physical Demands:  Must frequently lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.
     

    Subject to Passing Substance Screening:  This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening.  An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.

    Starting Pay: $23.24 (Step 1), Potential higher pay (steps) for those with multiple years of experience.
