Lead the Way in Keeping Sarasota County Moving

Are you a proven leader with hands-on experience in Transportation field operations? We’re seeking a dynamic manager to lead and inspire our frontline teams responsible for keeping Sarasota County’s transportation system safe, reliable, and responsive.

In this key leadership role, you’ll oversee two direct reports and approximately 20 skilled team members, guiding daily operations for both routine and emergency maintenance. You’ll ensure crews are fully equipped with the tools, materials, and resources they need to succeed, while maintaining a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and accountability.

You’ll collaborate across departments on critical functions such as budgeting, staffing, scheduling, employee development, and performance management to keep operations running smoothly and effectively.

About the Position

What You’ll Do:

Operations:

  • Organize, coordinate, and schedule daily activities for assigned work crews, including routine and emergency operations
  • Monitor and enforce safety practices, ensuring proper use of equipment and compliance with county, state, and OSHA regulations
  • Utilize computerized systems to manage scheduling, timekeeping, activity logs, and workload priorities to meet deadlines
  • Coordinate materials, supplies, inventories, and major equipment needs for scheduled and emergency work sites
  • Prepare and manage master schedules for routine maintenance, collaborating with outside contractors and vendors as needed
  • Interface with other divisions, units, and city officials to support operational planning and resource coordination

Administration:

  • Participate in business planning and implements operating budgets, staffing plans, goals, and objectives
  • Oversee hiring, performance management, training, and disciplinary actions, providing direct supervision to two staff members
  • Research operational and equipment costs, monitors expenditures, and ensures efficient use of resources
  • Analyze operational performance and workforce effectiveness, recommending improvements to plans and processes
  • Develop long-range maintenance and staffing plans, coordinating efforts with internal teams and outreach groups
  • Assist with labor relations activities, including union negotiations, and supports ongoing employee development and training

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Construction, Business Administration, Finance, or a highly related field AND four (4) years of performing maintenance/general operations work experience
  • -OR- Associate's degree from an accredited college or university AND six (6) years of job-related experience
  • -OR- Professional-related experience may substitute for the required degree on a year-for-year basis
  • -AND- Two (2) years or more of supervisory experience in the related field
  • A valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of current principles and practices relating to Transportation operations and maintenance
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local policies and regulations related to Transportation management
  • Ability to analyze operations and maintenance problems and develop and implement appropriate procedures for correction
  • Experience in creating and implementing routine maintenance schedules

Subject to Passing Substance Screening:  This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening.  An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment for a period of five (5) years. 

Physical Demands:  Must frequently lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.

Starting Pay Range: $75,233.60 - $83,000.00/ annually, based on experience
