Caregivers in the Cardiothoracic OR use their in-depth experience to perform complex operations with the newest surgical techniques, equipment and devices, including minimally invasive, off-pump bypass, robotically assisted and percutaneous procedures. Whether you are an experienced RN or a new graduate, all nurses entering an OR specialty unit participate in a comprehensive orientation program to ensure a smooth transition into the surgical environment. In this role, you will collaborate closely with the surgical team to deliver exceptional patient care, from the initial introduction to the final send-off. Additionally, the Cleveland Clinic system provides nurses with many professional development resources, including furthering education and online/in-person courses to enhance your skills.

A caregiver in this position will have their shifts assigned after orientation. Orientation is 6 months long, Monday through Friday from 6:00am to 2:30pm.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Participate in a residency core curriculum based on surgery core learning needs.  
  • Provide direct nursing care alongside a success coach.  
  • Establish and/or revise priorities for patient care (acuity of need, patient preference and resource availability).  
  • Respond to data indicating risk to patients’ health and initiate action to correct, reduce or prevent risk.  
  • Seek supervision, consultation and assistance when unable to perform safely and independently.  
  • Document in patients’ medical records.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Professional Nursing 
  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross 
  • New graduate RN OR less than one year of RN work experience 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds and ability to push, pull, and navigate supply carts weighing > than 75 pounds periodically.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
