Our department is comprised of units specializing in both outpatient and inpatient surgeries.  Staff who join our units should be teamwork oriented and possess strong critical thinking, organizational, and decision-making skills.

This Magnet®-designated facility provides comprehensive medical and surgical care for its patients and is one of four recipients of the Truven Health Advantage Award in the category of Health and Clinical Outcomes. It is home to nine university affiliated residency programs. Here, you will find a Level II trauma center that is a nationally recognized heart, vascular and pulmonary specialties along with other specialties like orthopedics, neurosurgery, and women’s health. 

Scope of work

The certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) in accordance to the American College of Surgeon (ACS) provides direct aid to the primary surgeon in all aspects of surgery peri-operatively. This includes; exposure, hemostasis, closure (multi-modality), and all other technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation leading to optimal results. Also, they aid in the implantation, removal, manipulation, and securing of devices, prosthetics, tissues, and drains. In addition to, they may even harvest vein, arterial, and tissue grafts. The RNFA performs all of these functions under the direct supervision of the Surgeon. Lastly, the RNFA may also serve in the capacity of a Clinical Nurse.

Qualifications

  • Required Bachelor's Degree Nursing.
  • Required Completion of approved/accredited RNFA program.
  • Experience preferred, not required. Preferred
  • LIC-Registered Nurse (RN) - STATE_MI State of Michigan Upon Hire required
  • CRT-Nurse in OR (CNOR) - CCI Competency and Credentialing Institute Upon Hire required
  • CRT-RN First Assist, Certified (CRNFA) - AORN Association of perioOperative Registered Nurses Upon Hire required
  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association Upon Hire required
  • CRT-Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - AHA American Heart Association Upon Hire required
