Minimum Requirements:

  • Must currently be enrolled and remain enrolled in a school of respiratory therapy
  • Must have completed one semester of respiratory therapy school
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers through the American Heart Association prior to higher

Important Information you should know:

  • You will need to submit grades and class registration every semester prior to working
  • SRTs are required to work a minimum of 1 shift per pay period (2 weeks in a pay period)
  • Limited openings make Driscoll’s Student Respiratory Therapy Tech Program highly competitive.  Selection will be based on meeting the minimum requirements, successful completion of coursework, completed application, resume, and the interview process.

General Purpose of Job:

The Student Respiratory Therapy Tech provides respiratory therapy services to patients within the hospital and complies within the established standards of practice, policies, and clinical guidelines reflective of evidence-based practice. As a Student Respiratory Therapy Tech, you will provide equipment and patient care support in patient care units and deliver effective patient care within the framework of Driscoll Health System’s vision of excellence and integrated care delivery

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive; employees will perform other reasonably related business duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or hospital administration as required.

  • Continue or assist in physician prescribed treatments of a routine nature operating various respiratory equipment, various oxygen and aerosol devices, and various nebulizer devices to administer prescribed medications, humidification, and oxygenation.
  • Performs chest physiotherapy by operating various equipment to promote secretion clearance.
  • Performs suctioning of the patient by various methods (oropharyngeal, nasal and tracheal).
  • Performs 12-Lead EKG and basic arrhythmia recognition.
  • Assists with oximetry and capnography monitoring.
  • Assists with tracheostomy care according to policy.
  • Assists with reinforcing patient/family education.
  • Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation according to BLS guidelines.
  • Facilitate preventative maintenance and repair of equipment as needed.
  • Performs set-up and self-test on all ventilatory equipment as required, may include prior cleaning or disinfecting of devices.
  • Communicates significant information and changes in patient condition to the Licensed Respiratory Therapist.
  • Adheres to infection control policy and procedure including hand washing, use of PPE, and observations of precautions.
  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines
  • Responds to communication devices such as phone/vocera/call bells
  • Completes documentation associated with responsibilities in electronic medical record.
  • Manages room/patient care equipment stocking: stocking supplies, checking for expiration dates, ordering supplies, and cleaning equipment and toys.
  • Patients at risk for self-harm or harm to others performs room safety check, performs non-clinical patient assistant role for patients at risk for self-harm or harm to others.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited respiratory care program, pursuant to Texas licensure
  • Completion of the first year/fundamentals of respiratory therapy, or equivalent, is required

Certificates, Licensure, Registration:

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers through the American Heart Association prior to higher
