Respiratory Therapy Assistants work with respiratory therapists in treating patients who have breathing and cardiopulmonary problems. Their duties include testing patients, operating equipment to administer gases and drugs, monitoring patients, teaching patients how to use home equipment, and maintaining records.
Clinical Practice
- Capable of administering very basic respiratory therapeutics with moderate skill and proficiency requiring a high level of supervision.
- Capable of understanding a patient care plan and respiratory care modalities used to provide patient care.
- Capable of administering very basic respiratory therapeutic modalities (e.g., gas/humidity therapy, bronchial hygiene, lung inflation, and medication aerosol) with moderate proficiency and high level supervision.
- Reviews all the key respiratory assessment elements (pulse rate, respiratory rate, breath sounds, cough/sputum, chest wall/movement, perceived work-of-breathing) in >80% patients cared for.
- Uses effective time management in work organization and triaging.
- With consideration for work assignment and experience, routinely (>75%) completes work assignment with minimal assistance.
Teamwork
- Develops a broad working knowledge of the medical profession to form an understanding of the role Respiratory Care Practitioner plays in health care and other health care professionals.
- Works closely with assigned mentor to learn techniques that can be used in developing relationships with physicians and nursing personnel.
- Works at developing relationships with various levels of co-workers within the respiratory department to obtain an understanding how to relate to and with patients, families and other professionals.
- Makes a concerted effort to become a member of the respiratory care team, by demonstrating a willingness to assist other, maintain good attendance and service excellence in the spirit of the Organization system.
Quality
- Works at developing an understanding of quality as it relates to patient care and job performance.
- Uses classroom knowledge of patient care and applies it to actual clinical situations to enhance the ability to understand the best possible quality patient care and outcomes.
- Capable of developing a patient care plan and relating all facets of the patients care to co-workers and supervisors.
Professional Development
- Assumes responsibility for professional development through self motivation and demonstrating a willingness to learn.
- Successfully completes at least 5 non-mandatory continuing education units and provides documented evidence to the department for the evaluation year.
- Successfully completes all departmental, hospital and system competencies required for the job category within the designated time frame.
- Supports the advancement of the respiratory care profession by participating in at least one system, hospital, department or professional initiatives.
