The mission of the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center’s Internship Program is to provide recent graduates with a one year mentored clinical program that includes work-based learning directly supervised by board certified specialists as well as didactic training to advance each interns’ clinical competence and prepare them for the next step in their career. Since 1964, the prestigious Internship Program at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC) has trained the next generation of veterinary leaders. Rotating through our multi-specialty hospital with its diverse caseload, AMC interns gain unparalleled hands-on experience under the guidance of leading specialists.
AMC offers the highest level of patient care including an American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Level 1 Trauma Center and American Animal Hospital Association Specialty Hospital and Internship certification. In this environment of high-quality care, the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center’s well-established training programs prepare veterinarians to be the next generation of leaders. As an organization with a culture of teaching and learning, interns have ample opportunities to create a resume to support successful application for their chosen career pathway and nearly all interns who elect to continue their education beyond the internship are matched to a residency position or high quality specialty internship. When time permits, interns can write and publish a case report or retrospective study in the area of their interest. Additional activities to enhance residency applications are varied and may include peer review of a scientific manuscript, poster presentation, authoring disease specific monographs and other scholarly activities. Interns can also use elective time for unique specialty conferences such as the Annual Meeting of the Veterinary Cancer Society and the American College of Nephrology- Urology Renal Week.
The internship consists of 13 rotations of 4 weeks each. Each intern rotates through medicine and emergency at least 3 times and 1-2 times through surgery. Each intern rotates through anesthesia and radiology for 2 weeks. Most interns rotate through IR and rehab for 2 weeks. cardiology, ophthalmology, neurology and oncology are assigned based on interest. One rotation is an elective rotation during which the intern can elect any service. This rotation can also be used to work with board certified specialists outside of the AMC.
