Resident Engineer

Civil Science is growing our Construction team in Utah and is seeking a licensed Resident Engineer to support UDOT projects throughout southern Utah (Regions 3 & 4).

This is a key, client-facing leadership role responsible for representing Civil Science and its clients, including UDOT, in the field, overseeing construction activities, managing inspection staff, and ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with UDOT standards. This position also plays an important role in mentoring field teams and supporting the continued growth of Civil Science’s presence in southern Utah.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform construction management duties as the Resident Engineer or UDOT on transportation projects in southern Utah
  • Oversee contractors, field crews, inspectors, and support staff
  • Manage construction projects to ensure full compliance with UDOT plans, specifications, safety standards, and quality requirements, while providing thorough documentation and quality control
  • Administer contracts including RFIs, change orders, pay estimates, and claims documentation
  • Coordinate directly with UDOT personnel, contractors, municipalities, and stakeholders
  • Conduct site inspections and proactively identify risks and mitigation strategies
  • Mentor and lead field teams while fostering a collaborative, accountable culture
  • Support business development efforts and help expand Civil Science’s CEM presence in southern Utah

What Qualifications You’ll Need:

  • Utah Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience following PE licensure
  • Experience overseeing contractors and inspection staff
  • Strong working knowledge of construction safety standards
  • UDOT CEMT certification (or ability to obtain within 3 months)
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass background check
  • Willingness to travel, including occasional overnight stays
  • Ability to work in active construction environments in various terrains, to sit for extended periods, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and perform physical activities such as standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, including working on active construction sites with uneven terrain, varying weather conditions, and moderate to high noise levels

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • 8+ years of highway/DOT construction experience
  • Prior experience serving as a UDOT Resident Engineer
  • Strong knowledge of UDOT standards, specifications, and contract administration
  • Experience in UDOT Regions 3 and/or 4
  • Established relationships with UDOT personnel
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent construction projects
