Summary of Job Duties:

The Residence Hall Specialist is supervised by the Director of Residence Life, and is a full-time professional staff member of the Department of Residence Life. The Residence Hall Specialist supports the student experience by leading the planning and implementation of a robust residential experience. The Residence Hall Specialist is responsible for the selection, training, mentoring, supervision, and evaluation of up to 15 student Resident Assistants and assists in the development and management of safe and inclusive communities where students can fully engage with both living and learning experiences. The Residence Hall Specialist will accomplish this through engagement planning and implementation, student support, student conduct education, student staff supervision and coaching, crisis response and management, and administrative work.

The Residence Hall Specialist is a 12-month, 40-hour per week, live-in staff position that will require evening and weekend engagement and commitments. This position serves on a 24/7 on-call rotation providing crisis response to all residence halls on campus.

The Residence Hall Specialist is responsible for the daily operation and management of assigned area. Duties will include but not limited to administering student residence occupancy programs, interpreting residential hall policies, and providing guidance for students in residence halls. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • A bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution. 

  • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis, but not for the specific years of experience. 

  • Two (2) years of professional experience working residence life, student/academic support, student conduct, event planning, or related experience.

Additional Information:

Responsibilities:  

  • Manages the day-to-day operations throughout each semester and the opening/closing of the hall at the beginning and end of each semester, of assigned residential community of up to 300, primarily undergraduate, students living in varied types of room and/or suite-style spaces. 

  • Hires, trains, supervises, coaches, and evaluates student staff. 

  • Facilitates individual bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with each direct report and weekly staff meetings with all student staff in the residence hall 

  • Focuses on relationship building and student interaction on a daily basis with residents. 

  • Serves as a visible and accessible resource in the community for student and family interaction, support, and development. 

  • Promotes an environment in the residence halls that supports the mission of the university, the Division of Student Engagement, and the Department of Residence Life. 

  • Facilitate student connection and referrals to other University and campus offices for personal and academic support. 

  • Promotes student identity development through culturally competent support, education, and intervention; on-going engagement efforts; and partnerships with and referrals to appropriate University offices. 

  • Partners with UBIT, Office of Student Conduct, Student & Community Counseling Center, and Wellness Center to provide input and follow-up related to on-going cases involving students living in assigned residence hall. 

  • Works with Residence Life team to partner with other student-facing offices on both in-hall engagement initiatives and campus-wide engagements 

  • Partners with the Director and Assistant Director of Residence Life, Maintenance Department, Custodial Services and University Police Department in promoting and maintaining a physical residence hall environment that is safe, accessible, functional, well-maintained, and conducive to living and learning. In accomplishing this, performs regular inspections of common spaces and oversees move-in and move-out inspection processes for assigned residence hall. 

  • Complete regular administrative tasks such as filing, auditing, reporting, communicating, and other office-related work. 

  • Manages occupancy of assigned residential area in partnership with the DRL and ADRL through regular audits of rooms moves, inspections, and keys. 

  • Manages and, when beyond student staff scope, mediates interpersonal conflicts, primarily roommate/suitemate conflicts. 

  • Utilizes software systems such as StarRez, Maxient, Microsoft Office Suite, and others to perform administrative functions of the position. 

  • Serves in a designated on-call rotation. throughout each semester, including summer and break periods, responding to and managing crisis, emergency, and elevated situations as needed. 

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
