What’s the role
Strategic Programme Leadership
Own and lead multi‑year, high‑value Reservoir Engineering R&D programmes, setting technical ambition, delivery strategy, performance metrics, and value realization plans.
Translate asset and business needs into focused, investment‑grade R&D initiatives with clear technical and commercial outcomes. often under uncertainty and evolving asset priorities. Maturity to frame, scope and lead the execution of multiple R&D projects independently without supervision.
Provide technical and strategic leadership across both internal and external R&D delivery teams, ensuring alignment of partner led research with Shell’s Reservoir Engineering standards, asset needs, and value realization objectives.
Pre‑Salt Carbonate Reservoir Authority
Act as senior technical integrator and reference point for pre‑salt carbonate reservoirs across Shell Brasil Technology.
Lead R&D themes across carbonate characterization, dynamic modelling, recovery mechanisms, SCAL/digital rock, monitoring, uncertainty reduction, and upscaling.
Portfolio & Governance Accountability
Accountable for Reservoir Engineering elements of the ANP R&D portfolio, ensuring: (i) Regulatory compliance, (ii) Budget discipline and schedule control and (iii)Technical quality, technology maturation and benefit tracking
Drive simplification, prioritization, and termination decisions where programmes do not meet performance or strategic thresholds.
Ensure effective technical and commercial governance of externally executed R&D programmes, including universities and technology providers, with clear decision rights, performance metrics, and escalation mechanisms.
Safety, Quality & Risk Leadership
Senior accountability for safe execution of laboratory, onshore, and offshore R&D activities, including new laboratory build‑outs and facility upgrades.
Set non‑negotiable standards for HSE, research integrity, data governance, and external partner performance.
Integration, Influence & Capability Building
Lead senior‑level engagement with assets, global SMEs, co-ventures, ANP, vendors, academia and technology partners, acting as a credible Reservoir Engineering authority capable of steering complex technical discussions and research direction.
Coach senior and junior professionals; build long‑term Reservoir Engineering capability and succession depth within Shell Brasil.
Strong leadership to influence internal and external stakeholders to achieve targets under a dynamic scenario, including misaligned timelines and priorities across asset teams, SMEs, and academic or industry partners delivering Shell funded R&D.
What you bring
Must have legal authorization to work in Brazil on a full-time basis for anyone other than the current employer
Post‑graduate degree in Reservoir Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or equivalent subsurface discipline.
At least 10 years of experience in reservoir engineering and subsurface disciplines, with strong exposure to complex carbonate systems (ideally Brazilian pre‑salt).
Background in R&D leadership, asset support, or senior technical roles is required; practical experience delivering R&D projects is a plus.
Expertise in carbonate reservoir behavior and recovery; SCAL, digital rock, and advanced laboratory programs; and reservoir modeling and simulation, including monitoring and uncertainty management.
Demonstrated application of advanced methods and digital/AI solutions in subsurface decision‑making, with the ability to engage deeply with academic and industry research teams, critically evaluate methodologies and results, and translate research outcomes into practical Reservoir Engineering applications.
Strong capability in problem framing and decision‑making under uncertainty and competing priorities, with the ability to articulate clear trade‑offs and deliver value‑based recommendations to management.
Proven track record in simplifying complex challenges, challenging non‑value‑adding work, and focusing teams on outcomes that matter. Demonstrated entrepreneurial leadership in originating, shaping, and managing strategic R&D partnerships with universities and technology companies, ensuring sustained technical leadership, influence, and value realization within the Brazilian ANP R&D context.
Executive‑level communication skills in Portuguese and English.
Ability to influence and steer senior internal and external stakeholders across business, technical, and regulatory environments.
It is required frequent travel (25%)
