The Ohio State University, College of Engineering, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is seeking a Researcher (Researcher 3). This will be a Senior level Researcher role within the College. This is a Specialized Track role where the work will be  achieved through individual efforts as well as participation through project teams. The work done in this role may coordinate, review or influence the work of others within the Department. 

 

Minimum Required Education is a Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mathematics, or equivalent with a PhD in  Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Mathematics preferred.  

 

Candidate must have 3 years of relevant research experience. 

 

Required Experience: 

  • Demonstrated experience in multiscale modeling and/or process modeling and control 

  • Strong background in machine learning and data-driven modeling for engineering systems 

  • Experience with scientific programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB) and numerical methods 

  • Proven ability to conduct independent research and publish in peer-reviewed journals 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 

 

Desired Experience: 

  • 3+ years of experience with hybrid modeling (physics-informed ML, surrogate modeling, digital twins)  

  • Familiarity with process control, optimization, and uncertainty quantification  

  • Experience integrating simulation (e.g., CFD, DFT, kMC) with machine learning models  

  • Background in energy systems, advanced manufacturing, or materials processing  

  • Experience with AI frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow)  

  • Prior involvement in proposal writing or funded research projects  

  • Experience mentoring students or junior researchers 

 

Researcher should be fully experienced within the Research Laboratory environment. Researcher will serve as a resource for Research Technicians, Graduate Research Associates, Undergraduate Research Assistants and Undergraduate Students. Researcher will apply their research knowledge and a thorough understanding of the Research being performed to lead research and work independently. Researcher will work on complex research projects of large scope within the Department. Researcher will be able to complete routine work independently; while only requiring general guidance on new research initiatives and projects. 

 

Researcher will conduct research on multiscale modeling, hybrid physics-machine learning modeling, and process control, including model development, validation, and deployment for complex engineering systems, as well as oversee junior researchers performing these tasks;  Perform data analysis and develop machine learning models by integrating simulation and experimental datasets; prepare research results for publication;  Design and plan research to test hypotheses related to multiscale phenomena, model interpretability, and process optimization;  Work alongside the PI on grant proposals to secure external funding from federal agencies; contribute to project reports and perform other duties as assigned. 

 

Specific Research Areas that the Researcher will be involved in will include Multiscale Modeling, Process Control, Hybrid Modeling and Machine  Learning
