[What the role is]

About This Role

The Heritage Policy and Research (HPR) Division of NHB conducts research, documentation on archaeology, tangible heritage and intangible cultural heritage, as well as assessment of heritage buildings, sites and structures. The division works closely with government planning agencies to factor in heritage considerations into the planning processes; and also works with agencies to facilitate consultations and engagement with non-government organisations and heritage interest groups. In addition, the division works on policies and initiatives to uncover Singapore’s archaeology and foster greater interest in our nation’s history.

HPR is seeking a Researcher to lead the historical documentation and development of approaches to preserving and interpreting the memory of heritage sites and nationally significant events.

The successful candidate will conduct in-depth research on Singapore's mid-20th century history, focusing on political developments and key historical figures. Based on this research, the candidate will conceptualise narratives and interpretive approaches that illuminate how the subject sites/events contributed to Singapore's nation-building history. Working with diverse stakeholders, the candidate will contribute to developing interpretive approaches that connect a wider audience meaningfully with Singapore's national history.

[What you will be working on]

Historical Research and Documentation

• Conduct comprehensive research on Singapore's post-war history, focusing on primary and secondary materials. This includes direct engagement with relevant individuals to gather oral histories and personal accounts/ perspectives.  

• Apply appropriate research methodologies and analytical frameworks to ensure rigorous data collection, source verification, and critical evaluation of historical materials, including assessment of potential biases and conflicting accounts.

• Utilise research findings to deepen and reinforce knowledge of the subject sites’/events’ historical values, which will facilitate site planning, stakeholder engagement and public communications.

Strategic Narrative Development and Historical Interpretation

• Develop and evaluate approaches to preserving historical memory of the subject sites/events in a manner that best serves future generation of Singaporeans' understanding of our national history.

• Conceptualise storylines and themes for the subject sites/events, particularly its historical significance and contribution to Singapore's nation-building story.

• Present research findings and curatorial concepts to stakeholders, effectively communicating the proposed historical narrative for the subject sites/events through various formats tailored to diverse audiences.

 Project Management and Coordination

• Plan and manage research projects, including timeline development, resource allocation, and coordination of multiple research activities across different phases and stakeholders.

• Collaborate effectively with internal teams, external institutions, community partners, and subject matter experts to enhance research outcomes and ensure comprehensive coverage of historical topics.

[What we are looking for]

• Background in History, the Humanities or other disciplines relevant to Singapore's history.

• At least 3 years of experience in historical research, with demonstrated knowledge of Singapore's history would be advantageous.

• Proven excellence in archival research, analytical thinking, academic writing, and public presentation skills.

• Ability to synthesise complex information into accessible narratives.

• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience facilitating interviews and managing relationships with diverse groups.

• Resourcefulness in locating historical materials and strong project management capabilities.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Background in museum or exhibition curation.

• Experience in public service would be advantageous.

Successful candidates will be offered a 2-year contract in the first instance.
