The College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University is seeking applicants for a Research Technician position. The successful candidate will serve as a Research Technician supporting studies focused on emerging animal viruses with zoonotic potential within the Department of Veterinary Biosciences. Under the direction of a faculty investigator and senior research staff, assists in the execution and documentation of laboratory experiments related to host–virus interactions, molecular virology, and cellular immunology. Responsibilities include preparing reagents, maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies, setting up and performing experiments using established protocols, processing biological samples, recording experimental observations, and performing data entry and basic data analysis. Assists with routine laboratory operations, literature searches, and preparation of figures, summaries, and presentations. May guide student assistants in routine laboratory procedures. Performs additional research support duties as assigned by supervising personnel or defined by the project’s funding source.
This position is ideal for candidates seeking hands-on experience in translational virology, host–pathogen interactions, and emerging zoonotic virus research within a collaborative academic veterinary medicine environment. Opportunities for professional development may include authorship on publications, conference presentations, mentoring, and training in advanced experimental techniques.
Working Conditions:
Requires laboratory work in BSL-2, BSL-2+, and occasionally BSL-3 research settings with potential exposure to viral and other infectious agents, primary cells, hazardous chemicals, sharps, and animal tissues. Duties include extended periods of standing at the laboratory bench, repetitive pipetting, prolonged microscope and computer work, and occasional lifting of laboratory supplies or equipment. Strict compliance with institutional, state, and federal biosafety, PPE, and animal care regulations is required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, molecular biology, virology, immunology, animal sciences, or related biological science field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with basic laboratory techniques, including pipetting, sample preparation, sterile technique, and data entry.
- Ability to follow established laboratory protocols and maintain accurate records.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and basic data analysis.
Desired Qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology, molecular & cellular biology, immunology, animal sciences or related fields.
- Prior experience with cell culture, PCR/qPCR, nucleic acid extraction, or virology techniques.
- Experience working in BSL-2 laboratory settings.
Final candidates are subject to successful completion of a background check. A drug screen or physical may be required during the post offer process.
