The DeSilva Lab investigates how neuroinflammation contributes to neurodegenerative diseases, including multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease, with a focus on identifying molecular drivers of glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity and early cell-death pathways in neurons and myelin. Their work aims to develop therapeutic strategies that intervene early in disease progression before significant neurodegeneration occurs. As a Research Technician on our team, you will support a new corporate contract grant with Bivium Biosciences by managing animal care for the electrophysiological mouse model and assisting with the development of a preclinical mouse model to advance the project’s research objectives. You will also assist with ordering and coordinating drug development components, including sequence development and antigen generation, while performing laboratory techniques and procedures, supporting the scheduling of analyses, conducting tests, compiling experimental data and managing the procurement of laboratory supplies and equipment.

A caregiver in this role works days from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (with flexible start/end times)


A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Perform laboratory techniques and procedures required for experimental studies.  

  • Perform technical lab duties.  

  • Schedule and perform various analyses.  

  • Assist with establishing and scheduling various procedures and analyses.  

  • Prepare reagents, purify chemicals, and identify, separate and quantify various substances. 

  • Conduct testing and procedures utilizing laboratory equipment and instrumentation. 

  • Accumulate data from analyses.  

  • Prepare charts, graphs, statistical tables, publications, grant proposals and applications for research forms.  

  • Potentially order laboratory supplies and equipment.


Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High school diploma or GED and two years of experience in a research or related laboratory environment

  • OR an Associate’s degree in a laboratory science field and one year of work experience OR a Bachelor’s degree

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods

  • Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment

  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information

  • Ability to distinguish color

  • Manual dexterity to handle specimens and repair equipment

  • Ability to lift and transport equipment or specimens weighing up to 20  pounds

  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, bio-hazards, radioactive materials, etc.
