The Ohio State University, College of Engineering, Department of Materials Science and Engineering is seeking a Research Senior Technician (Research Technician 3). This will be a Senior level Research Technician role within the College. This is a Technical Track role where the work will be achieved through individual efforts as well as participation through project teams. The work will be technical and operational in nature. The Manager will provide the Research Technician with clearly established guidelines and procedures.

Candidate should be advanced technically as well as operationally within the Research/Laboratory environment. Individual will utilize their current technical and operational knowledge to accomplish the Research Objectives. A base and broad level of knowledge of Research/Laboratory processes and tools required in the Department through on the job training. Individual may provide assistance and training for Undergraduate Students and Undergraduate Student Employees within the Department and/or Laboratory. Individual will be able to recognize and solve routine issues that may occur within the Laboratory without supervisory approval. Individual will be able to complete routine Laboratory maintenance and work without guided instruction from the Manager. Instruction and general guidance will be provided to the Research Senior Technician when new Research Activities arise. Will log data results as well as communicate those results with other team members.

Specific Research Areas that the Research Senior Technician will be involved in will include assisting the lab supervisors and/or students in their respective areas: welding, mechanical testing, metallography, or facilities. Tasks related to the welding areas will include organizing gas cylinders and welding consumables while training/supervising students during welding or grinding/machining processes. Mechanical testing labs will require similar organization and supervision to the welding labs, with minor specific details regarding certain tests or users (as needed). The metallography lab involves handling and disposing of chemicals, organizing consumables for grinding/polishing, performing routine maintenance/cleaning on metallographic equipment and microscopes, and training/supervising students on these processes. Sometimes the lab supervisors will need help with basic facilities maintenance related to the labs such as replacing lights or fixing plumbing as necessary.

On the job training will be provided for everything in addition to online safety training for the relevant tasks (such as chemical disposal). Applicants should be comfortable using tools and at least generally familiar with things like Lock Out Tag Out procedures and 5S for cleanliness/organization.

Required Education:

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required; 4 years of relevant experience required with High School diploma or GED, 2 years of relevant experience required with Associate's Degree, or 0 years of relevant experience required with Bachelor's Degree.

Desired Education:

Bachelors Degree in Welding Engineering

Desired Experience:

1 year of experience in technical, hands-on roles related to any of the following areas: welding, metallography, mechanical testing or facilities.
