Job Title:

Research Scientist

Department:

Arts and Sciences | Chemistry and Biochemistry Administration

The Research Scientist within the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry under the College of Arts and Sciences will complete the remaining goals of our on-going NIH project, R35GM139545: “Highly Selective Catalytic Reactions of Alkenes and Alkynes Relevant to Medicinal and Process Chemistry”. In the final year of the project, most objectives have been achieved. The remaining goals involve applications of the newly discovered enantioselective reactions for the synthesis of medicinally relevant compounds. In this context, recently we have optimized the enantioselective heterodimerization of 1,3-dienes and alkenyl acetates. The products of these reactions of readily available precursors that could provide a facile entry into b-alkyl succinic acids (e.g., an intermediate for a metalloprotease inhibitor, Ro 32-3555) and b-alkyl GABA derivatives (e. g., Lyrica®), two motifs that are widely seen in medicinal chemistry. These studies are nearly complete, and we are waiting to complete the manuscript (Enantioselective Heterodimerization of Linear 1,3-Diene and Vinyl Acetate. A Facile Synthesis of β-Alkyl Succinic Acids and Metalloproteinase Inhibitor (Ro 32-3555’) to be submitted to a top-tier journal.

The Research Scientist will be expected to conduct experiments, collect and analyze data, and write preliminary drafts for publications in leading journals. In this role he/she will be preparing various substrates needed for the reaction, optimize the reaction conditions for these substrates, and attempt to convert the products of the reaction into pharmaceutically relevant targets as described in the proposal. He/she will adhere to the best practices as described in the group manual in conducting and reporting of the experiments, following the best possible safety protocols. The Research Scientist will also be expected to assemble and analyze data for eventual use in the preparation of progress reports, research proposals and publications.

Minimum Education Required

PhD Degree specializing in synthetic organic chemistry.

Required Qualifications

Expertise in theoretical and experimental synthetic organic and organometallic chemistry, and a sound background in homogeneous catalysis will be especially valuable. Experience of running reactions under anaerobic conditions, in separation and analytical techniques, including chiral stationary phase separations. Expertise in a wide range of spectroscopic techniques for the characterization of intermediates and products. Good written and verbal communication skills are a must

Desired Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to work independently and prepare publications in relevant format for top-tier journals. Postgraduate research experience and publications in top-tier peer-reviewed journals will be highly desirable.
