Northrop Grumman, Space Systems, is seeking a Research Scientist Manager 2 to lead our Liner and Insulation team. This position serves as the department focal point for developing liner and insulation for new programs and supporting production for existing solid rocket motor contracts. The position will be supporting the Propulsion Systems Division at our facility located in Promontory, UT.

Role Description and Responsibilities:

The Liner and Insulation engineering manager directs a high performing team of approximately 12 individuals who create innovative methodologies to solve complex engineering challenges, implement solutions that improve performance, reliability, and reduce lifecycle costs. The manager is also responsible to: mentor and bring out the best in each team member, help them meet and overcome challenges and progress in their careers, help them feel personal satisfaction in their accomplishments, and convey and implement department and corporate expectations.

Job Duties:

  • Direct engineering methodology and maintenance tasks for team

  • Direct liner and insulation activities and coordinate efforts across PS

  • Coordinate Team tasks, budgets, and schedules with program managers, IR&D leadership, project engineers, and others in PS

  • Oversee Team member workloads and task progression and completion

  • Mentor Team members in personal growth and career development

  • Lead and document periodic formal and informal performance reviews and determine merits and promotions

  • Review and update standard work requirements and guidelines

  • Determine staffing requirements

  • Support initiatives of engineering leadership

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in an engineering or science discipline and 8 years experience, M.S. degree in an engineering or science discipline with 6 years experience, or a PhD. Degree in an engineering or science discipline and 4 years experience.

  • Experience with polymers, isocyanates, and rubber materials used in SRM development and/or qualification efforts

  • Working knowledge and/or experience across multiple engineering disciplines and their interactions

  • Minimum 4-years experience leading teams and projects

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to interface with all levels of employees and management

  • Prior experience guiding and mentoring lower-level scientists

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in technical leadership of liner, insulation, or solid propellant rocket motor development / qualification efforts.

  • Project Engineering and or Program Management experience managing schedule, scope, and cost

  • Current active Security Clearance

  • Proven leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills

  • Experience with anomaly investigations identifying cause and corrective actions

  • Experience with proposal and pricing efforts supporting production programs

  • Prior experience in engineering functional management is a plus

Primary Level Salary Range: $135,100.00 - $202,700.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
