Job Description:

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Iowa State University is seeking a Research Scientist I to support and advance its growing research efforts in polymeric composite materials. This role will focus on the synthesis, testing, and characterization of polymers used in lubrication and photocrosslinked coatings, while contributing to innovative research projects within a dynamic and collaborative laboratory environment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical expertise, initiative, and a commitment to mentoring students and supporting the department’s mission of excellence in materials research and education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform testing, synthesis, and characterization of polymeric composites used for lubrication and photocrosslinked coatings.

  • Ensure the laboratory meets or exceeds safety regulations as defined by the EHS department; prepare required reports and standard operating procedures for synthesis and characterization tools.

  • Manage inventory of laboratory supplies and ensure proper functionality and cleanliness of the lab environment.

  • Train lab personnel on lubricant synthesis, polymer photocrosslinking, and general polymer synthesis processes.

  • Supervise 2–3 undergraduate students on synthesis and photocrosslinking projects.

  • Supervise graduate students on polymer synthesis and photocrosslinking research.

  • Provide semester performance reports on undergraduate and graduate students to Dr. Chang.

  • Conduct research with a high level of independence and minimal instruction from the PI.

  • Perform synthesis and photocrosslinking of sustainable lubricants and polymers.

  • Conduct angstrom-scale chemical etching of polymers.

  • Write, prepare, and publish research articles and technical reports on sustainable lubricants and polymers.

  • Assist the PI with preparing research proposals.

  • Attend and present research findings at conferences through talks and posters.

  • Prepare written reports and contribute to research papers as part of ongoing project dissemination.

This is a term position with an end date of June 30, 2026, with the potential for renewal based on funding availability.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at Iowa State University is dedicated to understanding and improving the materials that shape our world. Formed in 1975 through the merger of the Ceramic Engineering and Metallurgy departments, MSE is one of eight degree-granting departments in the College of Engineering.

Example of Duties
• Develops, designs and conducts one or more small or moderately complex research projects or experiments in line with plan, reviews progress and evaluates results.
• Formulates research methods and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, recommends and implements solutions, and collaborates in the development of new techniques.
• Assists with publications and writing or developing grants.
• Trains users in equipment operation and laboratory techniques, explains and demonstrates technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes.
• Coordinates data collection and screening and verifies the data.
• Conducts analysis of data, interprets and implements research methodology based on outcome of analysis.
