About the Department

The Enrico Fermi Institute (EFI) is a multi-disciplinary institute at the University of Chicago that assists with fundamental research in particle physics, astrophysics, geophysics and accelerator physics. It is part of the Physical Sciences Division (PSD). The EFI is also involved in training the next generation of researchers and is committed to creating a supportive environment that encourages teamwork among collaborators from all walks of life.


Job Summary

The Enrico Fermi Institute is seeking an experienced Physicist to work on the short and long baseline neutrino program at Fermilab and the University of Chicago, and in the particle physics detector R&D. These experiments take advantage primarily of Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber detectors. The experiments are underway now and will continue at different stages of design, construction, and running through 2035 and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, designs, and conducts research projects according to plan including collecting, analyzing, and maintaining data and/or specimens. 
  • Carries out small independent projects as well as bench-level experiments and techniques and computational work. 
  • Compiles research information to interpret experimental data and adjusts experimental protocols which includes drafting presentations or reports stemming from scientific contributions in the laboratory. 
  • Oversees lab members, which include graduate students and less experienced members, with the complex technical duties in a laboratory doing research and provides training to become proficient with routine procedures and protocols.
  • Reports data to supervisor and team, attends team meetings to share results, plans projects and experiments and ensures that projects support current team goals.
  • Participates in the preparation and writing of grant applications and reports, and co-authors/authors scientific research manuscripts. Provides peer review of grant applications and scientific manuscripts. 
  • Collaborates closely with other members of the lab, including postdoctoral researchers and research assistants. Fosters a collaborative and supportive research environment. 
  • Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis. Facilitates and promotes a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information. 
  • Trains and mentors laboratory personnel.
  • Performs other related work as needed. 


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • PhD in Physics.

Experience:

  • Background and experience in detector R&D with specific experience in liquid noble gas detectors.
  • Experience in Neutrino and Dark Matter Physics.
  • At least five years of postdoctoral experience in particle physics or a closely related field. 

Technical Knowledge & Skills:

  • Knowledge of basic computer proficiency including computer programs common in particle physics.
  • Knowledge of relevant scientific fields.

Preferred Competencies

  • Problem-solving, organization, analytical, and coordination skills including attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Work independently and as part of a team and interact with a diverse workforce.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to handle multiple, concurrent tasks within deadline with minimal supervision.
