Job Description

An excellent opportunity is available for a motivated and talented Research Officer to join the Hawkins laboratory in the Inflammation Division at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI). This position will contribute to the analysis of complex spatial data in clinical samples at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute.

About the Position

The role will involve the development of novel statistical strategies and bioinformatics software tools for processing, interpreting and analysing large spatial omics datasets related to haematological conditions. 

The position will be based in the Hawkins laboratory at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI). The laboratory aims to bring advanced discovery tools out of the research space and into the clinic, to improve understanding of haematology using next-generation omics technologies. The successful candidate will work closely with a passionate team of scientists and clinical pathologists and with members of WEHI’s outstanding Bioinformatics Division and with other collaborators and consumers across WEHI, RMH and externally.
 

Selection Criteria
The successful candidate will have extensive experience in large scale single-cell and spatial-omics data analysis and will be highly motivated to tackle complex problems in medical biology in an interdisciplinary environment.


Knowledge and Skills:

  • Relevant PhD/Doctoral qualification and relevant postdoctoral experiences in a quantitative discipline such as Bioinformatics, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational Biology.

  • Strong data analysis skills using R/python and Bioconductor software.

  • Experience in performing analyses using various software tools in Unix environment or on high-performance computing platforms.

  • Prior experience in genomic, transcriptomic, single-cell or spatial-omics research.

  • Expertise in machine learning or artificial intelligence.

  • Ability to manage data security and integrity.

  • Ability to work closely and effectively with scientists, bioinformaticians, and external collaborators from clinical and research settings.

Personal Qualities:

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Capacity to perform under pressure, to meet time constraints and determine work priorities.

  • Highly motivated to work on improving medical biology.

  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills to be able to work constructively within a team environment.

  • Excellent organization skills, attention to detail, and comprehensive documentation and record-keeping.


Terms of Appointment
This full-time position is available for a period of 2 years in the first instance with the possibility of renewal. Salary is Research Officer Level A ($104,071 - $111,707), or Senior Research Officer Level B1 ($117,596). Very attractive salary packaging options are available for general living expenses, meal entertainment, novated leasing and more. 12% superannuation payable, plus up to a further 5% after the first 6 months of service via our matching superannuation scheme.
