Research Engineer

Job Description:

The Research Engineer will serve as the technical lead for advancing the Network for Environmental Sensing & Technology (NEST) at Brown University. The position focuses on the design, development, deployment, and operation of sensor technologies for flooding, extreme heat, air quality, and related environmental hazards.

 

The Research Engineer will lead the technical architecture of the NEST sensor network, including communications, data pipelines, and the data management system, with primary responsibility for the NEST dashboard and associated visualization tools. Working closely with faculty, students, and community partners, the Research Engineer will translate research and community needs into robust, scalable environmental sensing and data solutions that support research, education, and climate resilience.

This position is 100% research funded and is for one year with the possibility of renewal, based on satisfactory work performance and dependent upon funding.

Education and Experience

●        Master’s degree is required in Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

●        A minimum of five years experience in IoT applications in environmental monitoring.

●        Knowledge of ultrasonic technology, LoRaWAN networks, and bi-directional communications.

●        Ability to work with off-the-shelf sensor components.

●        Proficiency in data analysis and scientific programming.

●        Understanding of regional-urban scale flood dynamics and modeling.

●        Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

●        Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

●        Passion for sustainability and climate resilience.
