Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

Job Summary
The Research Coordinator will provide support to the Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Investigators by coordinating materials development; collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data (both qualitative and quantitative); and preparing detailed research reports and manuscripts. The Research Coordinator will also be involved in preparing major grant applications for submission, including coordinating meetings among the research team and drafting initial versions of applications for team and PI review. This role will support the program of research of the PI, which focuses on various topics in Health Professions Education (HPE). Current research projects range from strategic initiatives to map and coordinate research in HPE across Canada and capacity building for health services delivery in underserved populations through strategic changes in training programs for health professionals, to clinical reasoning and entrustment of postgraduate medical learners.

Organizational Status
The Research Coordinator will report directly to the Principal Investigator, and other Co-Investigators as needed; and may receive administrative and logistics support from the CHES Administrative Manager.

The Centre for Health Education Scholarship (CHES) was formed in April 2008 to enhance health education scholarship across the Faculty of Medicine through collaboration, team-building, mentorship of new faculty, successful funding applications, and other activities. CHES serves as a resource to help support best practices related to the delivery and assessment of the Faculty's educational programs. Its researchers include UBC faculty, graduate students, post-graduate fellows, and clinical education fellows engaged in various research projects.

Work Performed
The Research Coordinator will:

  • Conduct complex data collection, analysis, and interpretation. This will mostly consist of qualitative data, but may also include quantitative data analysis on occasion.

  • Oversee the progress of the PIs research projects and coordinate a broad range of complex research activities; including instrument and study material revision; conducting field observations and interviews; data collection and coordination; and data analysis using specialized research software, and maintaining field notes of activities.

  • Coordinate and facilitate the collection, maintenance, interpretation, and reporting of these data.

  • Assist the PI in formulating study designs for the collection and interpretation of data.

  • Foster cooperative relationships with the full research team and other stakeholders to facilitate the flow of information and ideas, and ensure timely completion of the project.

  • Assist the PI with the preparation of grants to support research projects; preparation and dissemination of results including writing detailed research reports, and assisting in the drafting of ethics applications, as well as manuscripts for publication.

  • Maintain and secure data and files in strict adherence to the protocols established in the relevant ethics application and to CHES and UBC policies.

  • Provide general administrative and logistical support for the projects, as directed by the PI.

Working Relationships of the Research Coordinator:

  • Reports directly to the Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Investigators.

  • Interacts and works closely with other Project Investigators and collaborators at UBC and at other institutions as needed.

  • Interacts with project participants and agencies (e.g. Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons) as needed.

  • Interacts with CHES Administrative Manager and other CHES staff as needed.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Failure to adhere strictly to protocols approved by Ethics Boards, and to CHES and UBC policies regarding security of data has the potential to cause harm to study participants, to negatively impact the reputation of the investigators, CHES, and UBC, and to threaten ethics approval, access to funding sources, and access to study participants.

Poor decisions could delay timely completion of projects, cause financial loss and be damaging to reputation of the PI, the Director, the Centre, the Faculty of Medicine, and the University of British Columbia. In addition, errors could cause misinterpretation of results in information disseminated to decision-makers, the public, and academic audiences. The consequences could lead to inappropriate policy and decision-making related to health professions education.
to medical education.

Supervision Received
The Research Coordinator will work under minimum supervision, receiving specific instructions on unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedure.

No supervision given.
