Job Summary
The Research Coordinator will be responsible for oversight of a grant-funded project involving Indigenous women’s health, based at the Indigenous Equity Lab at UBC and the Women’s Health Research Institute. This qualitative study seeks to investigate the menopause experiences of Indigenous women.

The Research Coordinator will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, Indigenous health leaders, and other care providers to gather and share knowledge about Indigenous women’s experiences of menopause care in British Columbia (BC) and across Canada. Results will be used by communities and other health system stakeholders to make recommendations for access to culturally appropriate menopause programs, services, and shared decision-making protocols that are driven by Indigenous stories, knowledge, beliefs, values, practices, models of health and healing, as well as clinical best practices.

 

The Research Lab Coordinator provides operational, relational, and strategic leadership across lab activities. Including working closely with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, Indigenous Health leaders and other care providers to gather and share knowledge about Indigenous women’s experiences in healthcare, specifically menopausal care. Responsibilities will focus on conducting the study activities and developing trusting, mutually beneficial relationships with Indigenous leaders, communities, host nations, and organizations. This role maintains and stewards the Matriarch Wisdom Circle Advisory by coordinating gatherings, supporting respectful engagement with Elders and Knowledge Holders, and ensuring appropriate protocols and honoraria are upheld. Specific activities will include collaborating with partners to conduct study advertising, oversee participant recruitment, manage data collection (interviews, talking circles), data analysis, interpretation, manuscript preparation, and dissemination. The coordinator oversees project budgets and expenses, monitors timelines and reporting requirements, supports compliance processes and contributes to grant writing, data analysis and manuscript development. They coordinate onboarding of new lab students and junior staff. This position is grounded in Indigenous methodologies, relational accountability, and community-driven approaches to research. The Research Coordinator should have experience with Indigenous health and community-driven research. Experience in qualitative methods and/or women’s health research is an asset.

 

The Research Coordinator must be exceptionally organized and detail oriented. They must have strong skills for conducting partnered research with urban and/or rural Indigenous communities. This person must also be self-directed and able to excel in working with a remote or geographically dispersed team.


Organizational Status
The Research Coordinator will report to and receive direct supervision from the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Brittany Bingham, the lead/founder of the Indigenous Equity Lab and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and an associate member Obstetrics and Gynaecology at UBC. The coordinator is based at the Indigenous Equity Lab which is housed at the Women’s Health Research Institute (WHRI), a UBC-affiliated academic research centre housed at BC Women’s & Children’s Hospital. The WHRI has a strategic mandate of leadership in promoting women’s health, 2SLGBTQQIA+ health, gender equity and sexual health equity through in BC, Canada and globally. The WHRI is a network of members including UBC and SFU faculty, their UBC/SFU research teams, and affiliated trainees with shared mission and goals. The Indigenous Equity Lab is an Indigenous-led program of research established to identify and inform the implementation of culturally safe and equitable health services, support reproductive justice, gender health equity, revitalize traditional Indigenous wellness practices, amplify Indigenous voices, and support Indigenous capacity building and mentorship. We are situated on the unceded and traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ Nations. The incumbent will also interact closely with other members of the WHRI and Indigenous Equity Lab research team including staff, students, faculty, and internal and external collaborators.

Work Performed
o  Oversee all study procedures including screening, enrollment, and data collection and analysis

o  Oversee and participate in the assembling, reviewing and advising on the process of data collection and data management to ensure accurate and timely study progress.

o  Responsible for the accuracy, accessibility, and confidentiality of the project

o  Manage relationships with Indigenous partners, elders and decision makers who are collaborators on the study

o  Work with the Indigenous Advisory Circle and facilitate their quarterly meetings for data interpretation and knowledge exchange

o  Lead knowledge translation activities, including the preparation of content for manuscripts, PowerPoint presentations, evidence briefs, community reports, and infographics

o  Contribute to lab and team meetings and knowledge exchange activities with policy makers, clinicians, and Indigenous community partners as appropriate

o  Plan and deliver a knowledge exchange event celebrating the project and its partners; as well as an event/gathering of the Advisory Circle members

o  Prepare a sustainability plan for the project outputs, budgets, reporting and including next steps and research priorities

o  Lead onboarding of new FOM students to the lab and assist PI on HR related activities and regular work planning for students and staff.

o  Other duties as may be required

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Research Coordinator is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner, suited to proper activities of the University of British Columbia, Provincial Health Services Authority, and to the professional organizations governing themselves and those governing the activities of the Directors and all other investigators. Strict confidentiality of all study participants must be adhered to. Failure to follow ethical research guidelines and confidentiality could result in loss of funding and reputational damage to the Lab and Centre. All activities involving participants are accountable to the PI, the Department Head, and the Dean of Faculty of Medicine.

Supervision Received
The Research Coordinator will be directly supervised by the PI, Dr. Brittany Bingham. The incumbent will receive methodological and content support as needed from other staff and co-investigators. The Research Coordinator will be expected to exercise a considerable amount of judgment and initiative in their duties and responsibilities.

Supervision Given
The Research Coordinator may participate in the management of undergraduate and graduate trainees, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

o    Experience with Indigenous health, population and public health, social sciences, or interdisciplinary studies.

o    Demonstrated ability to work in interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral teams in Indigenous health

o    Strong interpersonal skills

o    Strong writing skills

o    Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision 

o    Experience with conducting qualitative interviews, and analyzing and interpreting qualitative data

o    Experience with NVivo and/or Atlas.ti qualitative analysis software

o    Ability to effectively use standard computer software at an intermediate level (e.g., Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, Powerpoint)
