The Research Communications Senior Writer serves primarily as a writer who translates the findings of Ohio State’s researchers into engaging, accurate content that is accessible and interesting to the media and the general public. Content areas for writing coverage include a combination of biological sciences and social sciences. The Senior Writer writes occasional features about research in progress and profiles of scientists and helps with the production of selected multimedia content. There are also opportunities to write about topics in other research areas. The Senior Writer works with college and unit communicators to identify, edit and aggregate appropriate research content, and collaborates with other Ohio State News editors to coordinate coverage, placement and timing of research news on the site. The role also assists with the management of research communications social media accounts.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or communication, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience; Minimum four years of experience with writing science and/or research news and feature stories for a higher education institution, government agency, nonprofit organization or the news media; Excellent writer with a strong interest in and knowledge about a range of scientific disciplines; Excellent news judgment, understanding of science and research processes, and strong organizational skills; Experience with media or public relations.
Desired Qualifications:
Advanced degree, including knowledge of research processes; Four to eight years of science writing; Editing or copyediting experience; Strong leadership skills, and proven ability to develop and maintain relationships with members of the media and internal partners.

The targeted hiring range for this position is $75,700 - $98,900.
Two science-related writing samples published within the past 3 years are required with your application.
