Job Summary
To assist with research activities within the UBC Mood Disorders Clinic, Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health.

Organizational Status
The Research Assistant reports to the Senior Research Coordinator and Dr. Lakshmi Yatham. The Research Assistant interacts with other psychiatrists, physicians, psychologists and research staff internally and externally, and with members of other departments within UBC Hospital (pharmacy and laboratory medicine), as necessary.

Work Performed
- Takes primary responsibility for coordinating multiple research studies
- Responsible for preparing Ethics submissions, amendments, renewals, and compliance documentation
- Assists in the preparation of protocol material (e.g., consents, ethics, protocols, patient information sheets)
- Recruits, screens, schedules and coordinates appointments for research participants;
- Obtains informed consent for studie
- Assists with patient flow through the clinic, as needed
- Administers questionnaires and neurocognitive tests to clinical subjects;
- Transcribes patient data into study report forms
- Scores instruments (tallying scores, checking scores for accuracy) completed by patients and clinicians
- Maintains study patient records in good order
- Performs data entry
- Maintains and checks research database for accuracy and completeness
- Completes literature reviews and internet searches, and retrieving articles from the library
- Prepares reports from research database
- Assists with basic statistical analyses
- Prepares draft manuscripts for publication
- Assists with grant applications
- Processes blood and urine samples for studies (centrifuging, pipetting, freezing, etc.)
- Prepares power point presentations
- Filing, photocopying and general office work
- Performs other related duties as required

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The person needs to be independently motivated, exceptionally organized, reliable and collaborative. The Research Assistant must possess attention to detail and understanding of data collection and maintenance from a variety of sources. The projects rely on maintaining a strong working relationship with healthcare professionals therefore, professionalism is of the utmost importance. Any errors in tracking all aspects of the project, data recording and entry, or breaches in confidentiality will jeopardize the outcomes of projects and future funding.

Supervision Received
Supervised by Principal Investigator and Senior Research Coordinators. Weekly meetings held to cover significant issues; Daily supervision and guidance handled by Research Assistants at higher classifications.

None.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute. Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. - Experience with administrating Neurocognitive tests, and experience and familiarity with psychiatric questionnaires and interviews will be an asset
- Experience working with clinical populations is desirable
- Previous experience writing manuscripts and authorship would be an asset. - Demonstrated experience with computers and computer software including MS Word for Windows, MS Excel, Power Point and SPSS
- Accuracy and attention to detail
- Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, multi-tasking and organizational skills;
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
