Job Description

Prairie View A&M University invites applications for a Research Assistant/Associate Professor of Veterinary Practice within the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources. This grant-funded position supports PVAMU’s mission to advance agricultural research, education, and service through innovative veterinary care and collaborative research with farm animals. The successful candidate will lead veterinary health programs, contribute to multidisciplinary research, and support teaching and service initiatives. Continued employment is contingent upon renewal of external funding.

This position is funded by a grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant or restricted funding.

The salary is determined in accordance with the University’s compensation structure and will be commensurate with the candidates’ education and experience, within the assigned salary range for this position.

Responsibilities:

Research

  • Conduct original research in animal health, reproduction, nutrition, welfare, and related.

  • Develop compelling research proposals to garner funding from external sources

  • Collaborate with researchers at CAFNR especially with those in the Animal Systems Research Group and external partners.

  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at national conferences.

Veterinary Services & Animal Care

  • Develop and manage herd health programs for goats, cattle, and poultry.

  • Oversee veterinary protocols including vaccinations, disease testing, and regulatory compliance.

  • Supervise veterinary staff and ensure adherence to USDA and IACUC standards.

  • Maintain best practices in animal husbandry, biosecurity, and zoonosis prevention.

Teaching & Institutional Service

  • Mentor students in veterinary care and in research.

  • Co-teach and contribute guest lectures in veterinary and animal science courses.

  • Participate in college-wide committees, outreach, and training programs.

  • Maintain professional licensure and engage in continuing education. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) or equivalent.

  • Minimum two years of clinical or research experience, or completion of a veterinary residency.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations governing animals in research.

  • Knowledge of Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) requirements.

  • Knowledge of veterinary health care practices and reproductive technologies.

  • Knowledge of newly developed and advanced treatment techniques relevant to agricultural species.

  • Ability to multitask and collaborate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders.

  • Strong verbal, written, and scientific communication skills, including the ability to develop research proposals and manuscripts.

  • Ability to maintain veterinary professional status through ongoing continuing education and current knowledge of veterinary medicine.

Required Registrations, Certifications, & Licenses:

  • Eligible for Texas Veterinary Licensure or willingness to obtain within 18 months.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in agricultural species and herd health management.

  • Familiarity with USDA regulations and CITI training.

  • Demonstrated success in securing research funding.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Commitment to continuous professional development.

Other Requirements:

  • Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
