Hiring Unit:

Position Summary:

  • Collaborate with research supervisor to develop a quantitative phase field model and high performance simulate code with which to investigate rapid solidification microstructure selection in moderate to rapid solidification of steel and aluminum alloys. The candidate will also be responsible for some mentoring of one graduate student.
  • Lead the collection and develop analysis methods for data coming from phase field modelling of binary and ternary alloy solidification, as delegated by and in discussion with the research supervisor, in order to explore how rapid cooling processes alter microstructure morphology in two-phase steel.
  • Plan and lead new model improvements to capture properties of rapid solidification as they pertain to the requirements on an industry partner co-funding this project.


Qualifications:

  • Experience developing and analyzing phase field models of non-equilibrium phase transformations.
  • Experience with high performance computing.
  • Experience with solidification and casting techniques.

Experience and education:

  • PhD physics or material science.
  • Publications involving phase field modelling in the topic of solidification.
