Research Associate – Creswell Lab – Dietrich College

Carnegie Mellon University’s department of Psychology is searching for a Research Associate to join their team.  This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by providing support in assisting in all aspects of a large, federally-funded, longitudinal clinical trial examining responses to alcohol consumption and the development of alcohol use disorder (AUD).

Core responsibilities include:

  • Recruit, screen, and schedule research participants, and track participants for follow-up sessions.

  • Conduct research sessions with community participants using sensitive study procedures, including alcohol administration protocols and structured clinical interviews related to alcohol use disorder (AUD); training will be provided.

  • Prepare study materials and perform video- and audio-recorded assessments.

  • Program ecological momentary assessment (EMA) surveys, monitor incoming data, and maintain accurate study records through data entry, coding, and analysis.

  • Code video data using Ekman’s Facial Action Coding System (FACS); training will be provided.

  • Train and support undergraduate research assistants in study procedures and lab operations.

  • Maintain laboratory spaces, supplies, and equipment, attend lab meetings, and contribute to manuscript preparation and other research dissemination activities.

  • Provide support for additional lab studies and related research activities as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned

This position requires substantial flexibility in work hours to accommodate participant scheduling. The specific days worked will vary from week to week and will include frequent evening and weekend hours. Candidates should expect to work weekends as a routine part of the position, with occasional alternate days off depending on study scheduling needs.

You should demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of experimental methods in Psychology and an interest in applying research methods in a fast-paced clinical trial environment.

  • Excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally across a variety of audiences.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology required

  • 1-3 years of research experience required

  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check

Additional Information:

  • This is a full-time (37.5 hours), non-exempt position based in Pittsburgh, PA

  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a research team.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfort interacting with diverse community participants in a professional and sensitive manner.

  • An interest in gaining additional research experience in preparation for graduate study in Psychology.
