Job Description:

The John Carter Brown Library, located on the campus of Brown University, has one of the world’s most significant collections relating to the history of the early Americas, particularly focused on printed books, maps and prints.

The JCB Research Associate will work collaboratively on designated topics relevant to the library’s collections and mission, conducting research and producing both general audience and scholarly publications. Associated with the JCB’s initiative 2026 and Beyond, the Research Associate will undertake directed research and produce public-facing and scholarly work on histories and legacies of religions and freedom in the early Americas with an emphasis on the eighteenth century.

The Research Associate will also have the remit do a lot of independent decision making within the broad topic area.

This position will start on July 1st 2026.  

This position is 100% endowment funded and is for one year with the possibility of renewal for up to 3 years, based on satisfactory work performance and dependent upon funding.

Education and Experience

  • Phd required in a relevant field before July 1, 2026.
  • Experience conducting research, writing, and producing publishable work.
  • Knowledge of the eighteenth century of the Americas, and of issues of religion and freedom broadly construed.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate on research and writing as well as work independently.
  • Demonstrated interest in public-facing as well as academic work.
  • Excellent communication skills: written and verbal.
  • Strong proficiency in social media platforms.
