Job Summary
The Dr. Foster Laboratory, in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of British Columbia will be looking to hire a Research Assistant/Technician 4 to join the team.

Organizational Status
The Research Assistant will report directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Leonard Foster.

Work Performed

  • Oversees the general beekeeping and maintenance of honey bee colonies, ensuring colony health and operational standards are met.

  • Establishes experimental colonies for the NSERC Alliance project led by Dr. Foster.

  • Monitors and assesses colony strength and health status.

  • Coordinates and works with Wild Antho personnel and other Foster Lab staff to design, modify and execute experiments.

  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
Failure to maintain a high standard of work with consistent communication between team members and the supervisors will result in delays and quality of research output, which may impact the working conditions, reputation, and funding for the research group and UBC.

Supervision Received
Works under minimum supervision, receiving specific instructions only on unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedure.

Supervision Given
May have supervisory responsibilities for a small group of employees at lower classifications and may have input into staff selection and performance evaluation.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience, such as beekeeping and Maintenance of honey bee colonies

  • Ability to initiate and conduct research projects.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment while dealing effectively with a diversity of people.

  • High degree of motivation, enthusiasm, organization, and initiative.

  • Ability to work independently and with other lab personnel.

  • Effective oral and written communication.
