Job Summary
This is a Research Assistant Technician 1 position and works within the Transgenic Animal Facility's Specific Pathogen Free animal unit. Responsibilities include maintaining daily care of laboratory mice; changing and cleaning animal cages, and racks; maintaining mouse data; disinfecting rooms; and general upkeep of the animal facility in accordance with unit Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the guidelines established by the UBC's Animal Care Committee.
Weekend work and occasional statutory holiday coverage is required for this position.
Organizational Status
The incumbent reports to the Director of Core Facilities and may also receive instructions from other senior staff members within the unit, as directed by the Director of Core Facilities.
Work Performed
Duties Include:
Maintains daily care of laboratory mice;
Changes and cleans animal cages and racks;
General upkeep of animal facility, including disinfecting rooms;
Maintains mouse data;
Strictly adheres to the Unit Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in place to protect staff and mouse colonies from harm and disease;
Heavy lifting required (up to a maximum of 25kg). Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift
Performs other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
All duties performed by the research assistant should adhere to the data privacy and confidentiality policies, standard operating procedures, and UBC policies. The impact of an incorrect decision could be critical as the facility houses invaluable research mouse strains. The procedures and protocols in place to protect these mice from disease and harm must be strictly adhered to.

Works under general supervision in carrying out duties and responsibilities delegated by the Director of Core Facilities to incumbent and other senior staff members.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with the Mosaic mouse colony management system is preferred.
VOA (Veterinary office assistant) certification and one year of related experience preferred.
CALAS (Canadian Association of Lab Animal Science) certification at the ALAT level preferred but lower classifications or equivalent experience will be considered.
Familiarity maintaining a clean and sanitary environment for animals.
Skills
Candidate will have effective oral and written communication and good organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to follow established guidelines and protocols.
Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
Ability to complete work assignments in a timely fashion is a must.
Attention to detail is critical.
Computer experience and the physical ability to lift and carry materials up to 25 kg are required.
Performing other related duties as required.
