About the project
This research project explores plant-based and regenerative material systems for sustainable design futures. The work investigates how biomaterials such as bacterial cellulose, plant fibres, and other bio-derived materials can be developed, tested, and applied within creative and design practices.
Through a combination of material experimentation, workshops, and research documentation, the project examines alternative material ecologies that reduce reliance on synthetic and petroleum-based materials. It also considers how locally available plant resources and biological processes may support circular production systems and new design approaches.
The research forms part of RMIT Vietnam’s broader work in sustainable materials and regenerative design. Outcomes will include experimental material development, documentation of practice-based research processes, and written outputs that contribute to emerging discussions on biomaterials, circular design, and ecological transitions in fashion and design.
Reports to: Dean of School, School of Communication & Design
Key Accountabilities
Conduct academic literature reviews on biomaterials, bacterial cellulose, plant-based textiles, regenerative systems, and circular material economies.
Assist with coordination and documentation of biomaterials workshops and experimental sessions.
Support material testing processes, including preparation, recording observations, and organising samples where required.
Map and synthesise contemporary research-led projects aligned with plant-based and regenerative design futures.
Prepare short research briefs summarising conceptual frameworks, material systems, and emerging practices.
Assist in drafting and editing scholarly and public-facing written outputs.
Compile and organise visual and textual documentation of material experiments for research dissemination.
Assist in gathering data and references related to plant-based production systems and ecological transitions.
Maintain organised documentation of research sources, citations, and experimental records.
Key Selection Criteria
Postgraduate qualification (or near completion) in Design, Architecture, Material Practice, Environmental Studies, Sustainability, or related discipline.
Demonstrated research experience in literature review and synthesis.
Interest or experience in biomaterials, plant-based materials, or sustainable design.
Strong written communication skills in English.
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
High level of attention to detail and organisational skills.
Experience documenting practice-based research (photography, basic layout, or visual documentation) is desirable.
Ability to display appropriate behaviours in line with the position and RMIT Values.

Contract duration: 03 months
Workload: Part-time (20 hours per week)

English Proficiency
English is the language of teaching and communication at RMIT Vietnam. For this role, the minimum requirement is IELTS General 6.5 (or equivalent CEST 170).
