We're seeking a Research Assistant to join the Birth and Infant Health Research (BIHR) program team. This is a government contractor position that is in support the Deployment Health Research Department at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA.
The BIHR program aims to examine reproductive health outcomes among military families and explore possible relationships between military service and reproductive health. The databases used by the BIHR program include large administrative and medical encounter/claims data that capture information on pregnancies and live births among military families.
The Research Assistant will work closely and collaboratively with Principal Investigators, epidemiologists, analysts, and study coordinators to support efforts across the full research project lifecycle. Specific research tasks will vary depending on the assigned project and its current phase.
We are actively seeking applicants who can work a minimum of 30 hours a week. We offer a flexible schedule, and employees can work anytime between the hours of 7:00am-5:30pm.
This is currently a hybrid position and employees are expected to come on-site to the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego a minimum of 2 days a week. This requirement is subject to change in the future based on project needs and contract requirements.
Responsibilities may include:
Research Support & Literature Review
Conduct comprehensive literature searches and synthesize findings from published studies
Assist in reviewing and editing study materials, reports, manuscripts, and presentations
Verify and format references according to specified style guidelines (e.g., APA, AMA, Vancouver)
Maintain citation libraries (EndNote/Zotero) on topics related to reproductive and infant health
Data Management & Analysis
Systematic review and abstraction of patient information from electronic medical records, including development of standardized data abstraction forms
Perform accurate data entry, validation, and tracking in computer databases
Generate tables, graphs, and data visualizations for inclusion in reports and presentations
Conduct basic statistical analyses using software packages such as Excel, SAS, or R
Help prepare data dictionaries and codebooks
Study Coordination & Participant Interaction
Coordinate subject recruitment activities and assist with data collection efforts
Administer informed consent processes, questionnaires, surveys, and interviews with research participants
Ensure strict adherence to research protocols, regulatory requirements, and ethical standards
Coordinate meetings and communications with internal team members and external stakeholders
Professional Development & Administrative Duties
Participate in ongoing training related to research compliance
Complete administrative requirements including goal setting, weekly project updates, time reporting, and mandatory training modules
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree
Minimum of 1 years of professional work experience
Reliable transportation and access to telephone and internet technology
Due to federal contract restrictions, candidate must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain a Secret Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with the military community
Experience working in human subjects research
Familiarity with reproductive and infant health issues
Familiarity with diagnostic and procedure coding systems (e.g., ICD, CPT)
