Overview:

RMIT Vietnam is seeking a Research Assistant, Enhancing hospitality vocational training in Lao Cai (6 months & Third-party contract) to support a community-focused research project by conducting fieldwork, data collection, and analysis, and coordinating project activities and stakeholders. The role also manages research documentation, assists in reporting and communications, and contributes to the overall delivery of the project.

POSITION SUMMARY

RMIT Vietnam is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Research Assistant to support a research project funded by the Gender Responsive Equitable Agriculture and Tourism (GREAT) initiative, supported by the Australian Government. The role involves conducting literature reviews, managing data, recruiting participants, scheduling and conducting interviews and surveys, and translating documents between Vietnamese and English. The Research Assistant will maintain research files, assist with data analysis, and prepare reports, correspondence, and visual materials. In addition, the role coordinates day-to-day project activities, serves as the first point of contact for project-related enquiries, and supports the planning and delivery of research events and communications. We are looking for candidates with strong organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Experience in education, training development, community development, or a background in business or social sciences will be highly regarded. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to meaningful, community-focused applied research in collaboration with RMIT academics and industry partners.

Key Accountabilities Summary

Specific responsibilities will depend on the topic, nature, and duration of the projects, provided by the Line Manager.

Duties may include:

1. Research and Fieldwork

  • Conduct fieldwork and research activities under the supervision of the Line Manager.

  • Travel to other regions or provinces to support fieldwork, stakeholder meetings, training sessions, or project-related events as required.

  • Conduct, record, and transcribe interviews in English or Vietnamese, including translation when necessary.

  • Assist with the design of data collection tools, scientific tests, and interview protocols.

  • Ensure that data collection, storage, and preliminary analysis follow required research protocols and ethical standards.

2. Data Management and Analysis

  • Conduct academic literature reviews and database searches.

  • Carry out qualitative and quantitative data analysis using appropriate tools and methods.

  • Prepare reports related to research outcomes, including presentations, research proposals, articles, and publications.

3. Project Coordination and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Coordinate communication between the research team, school administrative units, core project partners (i.e., Lao Cai College, Cowater, GREAT), government and NGO stakeholders, and external consultants to ensure clarity and timely follow-up.

  • Support day-to-day research activities and ongoing project coordination with the Line Manager and relevant stakeholders.

  • Develop internal and external contacts to further knowledge exchange and form collaborative networks.

  • Assist in preparing documentation for funder progress reports, internal reviews, annual reporting, and final project submissions.

  • Maintain comprehensive filing and documentation systems for all project-related materials, including contracts, procurement documents, training materials, meeting minutes, and correspondence with internal and external stakeholders.

4. Compliance and Professional Standards

  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and University policies, including research ethics, equity, health and safety, and data security requirements.

  • Demonstrate good practices aligned with RMIT values and professional standards at all times.

Key Selection Criteria

  • A postgraduate degree (Master’s) in Tourism, Human Resource Management, Education, Business, or a related Social Science field.

  • Demonstrated research experience, including primary and/or secondary data collection, supporting research proposal preparation, and contributing to research design in Arts, Science, Social Science, or Business.

  • Proficiency in conducting analytical research, with the ability to analyse, interpret, evaluate, coordinate, and report research findings.

  • Knowledge of literature review databases and experience using them for systematic searches.

  • Experience in preparing research reports and developing graphical or visual presentations of data.

  • Technical skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office, and the ability to use NVivo, SPSS, or R (preferred).

  • Strong planning and organisational skills, with a proven ability to prioritise tasks, manage multiple deadlines, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, with the ability to follow through on complex tasks and adapt to changing priorities.

  • Ability to work autonomously while contributing effectively to a team, including collaboration with colleagues, project leads, and industry partners.

  • High-level written and verbal communication skills, including proficiency in both English and Vietnamese.

  • Demonstrated commitment to professional and ethical behaviour aligned with RMIT values.

  • Respect for and ability to work effectively with diverse communities, including ethnic minority groups.
