POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of Professor George Demopoulos, we are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Assistant 2 to join our team at the HydroMET Lab to conduct and oversee bench‑scale experimental investigation on the electrolytic regeneration of iron metal fuel. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and testing of an electrolytic reactor system and perform advanced materials characterization to support this internationally funded research project.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The tasks of this position include but are not limited to the following:
Conducts research activities related to the electrolytic regeneration of iron metal fuel using established laboratory protocols, processes, and procedures, with minimal supervision.
Oversees and assists in the development, planning, execution, and optimization of bench-scale experiments, including:
Setting up, operating, and troubleshooting the electrolytic reactor system and associated instruments (power supply, pumps, etc.).
Conducting advanced material characterization of iron oxide powders using SEM, XRD, XPS, PSA, and BET.
Performing and supervising electrolytic tests by varying solids loading, temperature, voltage/current density, electrolyte composition, operating mode (batch vs. continuous), additives, and reaction time.
Preparing and maintaining research documentation, laboratory notes, and experimental logs.
Analyzes and interprets experimental and analytical data related to oxide powder suspensions, electrolytes, and metallic deposits, ensuring scientific rigor and reproducibility.
Writes and contributes to methodological notes, technical reports, scientific papers, or other research-related documentation.
Performs various administrative tasks related to the research project, including preparing bi‑weekly progress presentations and supporting coordination activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a closely related field.
Demonstrated at least two (2) years of research experience conducting independent laboratory-based research in a materials or electrochemical research environment is an asset
Strong hands-on experience with materials characterization techniques (SEM, XRD, XPS, PSA, BET).
Proven ability to analyze and interpret experimental data and prepare clear, well-structured technical documentation and reports.
Ability to work collaboratively in an international, safety‑sensitive laboratory environment.
Experience with electrolytic systems, electrochemical processes, or benchtop reactor systems is a strong asset.
Experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to students or junior research staff is considered an asset.
Familiarity/experience with benchtop reactor systems is an asset.
