Background

Cancer prevention and control in low-and-middle income countries

Dr. Aviane Auguste, Assistant Professor at McGill University's Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health, leads research initiatives focused on optimizing cancer prevention and treatment in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) of the Caribbean. His research addresses the challenges of resource-constrained health systems, including delays in cancer detection, overseas medical travel, and disparities in treatment access. Collaborative, multidisciplinary approaches and robust data analysis are central to these projects, which include the CaSIDEC study, a comparative epidemiological investigation across Eastern Caribbean nations.

This position supports Dr. Auguste's research activities by providing statistical expertise, managing data workflows, and assisting with basic project management tasks for studies conducted in collaboration with regional stakeholders and institutions.

Responsibilities

1. Data Management and Statistical Analysis

  • Design and maintain databases for epidemiological studies, ensuring compliance with data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR, ethical board standards).

  • Clean, preprocess, and validate datasets to ensure data quality and readiness for analysis.

  • Conduct advanced statistical analyses, including survival analysis, regression modeling, and trend analysis, as appropriate for cancer epidemiology and health systems research.

  • Prepare and document datasets for sharing with collaborators and archiving, ensuring adherence to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles.

  • Produce statistical summaries, visualizations, and interpretation of findings for internal reports, presentations, and publications.

2. Basic Project Management Duties

  • Coordinate timelines and deliverables across multiple studies, ensuring alignment with project milestones.

  • Assist in the preparation and submission of ethics applications, progress reports, and grant proposals.

  • Liaise with a network of collaborators, including community colleges, patient support groups, and other regional partners, to support seamless project implementation.

  • Track project budgets and ensure efficient allocation of resources under supervision.

  • Organize virtual and in-person project meetings, including agenda setting, minute taking, and follow-up communications.

3. Research and Knowledge Dissemination

  • Contribute to manuscript preparation, including drafting results sections for peer-reviewed publications.

  • Prepare materials for presentations at international conferences and stakeholder engagement events.

  • Support the training of junior team members and local field officers on data collection protocols and statistical methods.
