Department of Geography

Position Summary:

  • Identifying and retrieving geospatial datasets from sources such as government open-data portals, satellite imagery archives (e.g., USGS Earth Explorer, Copernicus Open Access Hub), academic repositories, and APIs, evaluating sources for quality, currency, and fitness for purpose.
  • Processing and preparing geospatial data for analysis, including coordinate system transformations, geometric corrections, raster-vector conversions, attribute joins, and data cleaning using tools such as QGIS, ArcGIS, or R and Python geospatial libraries (e.g., R's sf and terra packages, Python's geopandas and rasterio modules).
  • Executing geospatial analyses as directed, which may include geospatial statistics, land-use/land-cover classification, change detection, network, analysis, terrain analysis, or remote sensing-based feature extraction.
  • Assisting with the interpretation of analytical results under the guidance of the GIC Director, and contributing to the compilation of findings.
  • Producing research outputs including maps, figures, tables, and written documentation to support publications, reports, or presentations.
  • Maintaining clear and reproducible workflows, including documentation of data sources, processing steps, and methodological choices, in line with open science principles.
  • Implementing recommended improvements to existing methods of analysis or research as directed by the GIC Diretctor.
  • Assist in building and maintaining geospatial databases on Windows and Linux OS environments (e.g., PostGIS/PostgreSQL) for active research projects.
  • Assist in the development and deployment of WebGIS/WebMap applications to disseminate research data and results (e.g., using ArcGIS Enterprise, Leaflet, OpenLayers).
  • Deliver user-oriented training through workshops and tutorials covering GIS, geospatial data science, and remote sensing.
  • Maintain and contribute to GIC communication channels, including the website and social media accounts.
  • Assist in organizing GIC events such as GIS Day and other community-facing activities.
  • Assist the GIC Director in coordinating the front desk team and providing guidance and support to undergraduate, graduate, and faculty users of the GIC.

  • Display high degree of emotional and social intelligence to frequently interact with students and other researchers
  • Sound communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team with different skill levels
  • Willingness and ability to learn skills required to fulfill the duties, if not mentioned in the requirements above
  • Knowledge of using Generative AI in programming productively

Education and Experience:

  • Possesses subject matter expertise acquired through a Bachelor's Degree in Geographic Information Science, Geography, Remote Sensing or a related field
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience with geospatial research or academic research experience may be deemed equivalent.
