Summary:
The Southern California News Group is seeking a talented and aggressive journalist to cover crime and public safety in the Inland Empire. You will be part of a team that covers L.A., Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. The ideal candidate is tenacious and able to write gracefully and quickly in response to breaking news for online and mobile platforms, while also writing through for print. Most reporters work remotely, but there is office space available in parts of our coverage area.
This is a hybrid position responsible for reporting three nights a week while also serving as the night editor for the news group on Saturday and Sunday.
What you will do:
Cover a variety of topics and remain versatile; this role focuses on public safety and spot news but also includes opportunities for enterprise and investigative journalism
Work on assigned stories and pitch original story ideas on a regular basis
Research and develop stories with the utmost accuracy
Cultivate sources both in person and via social media
Maintain consistent communication with a supervising editor
Utilize company-provided hardware, software, and cloud-based systems for all business tasks
Contribute to a positive culture of teamwork and collaboration
Work nights and weekends as a standard requirement of the shift
What you will bring:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
Strong news judgment and a drive to compete on a high-stakes beat
Ability to write clean, concise copy that draws readers in, including nut graphs and SEO-friendly headlines
Flexibility to cultivate sources in person and via social media, with a comfort level in mining public records
Eagerness to juggle multiple stories of varying complexity, from quick news posts under intense deadline pressure to longer-term enterprise pieces
Proficiency in using the web and social media to report and distribute stories
Proficiency in a language in addition to English is a plus; Spanish, Mandarin, and Vietnamese are key languages in our coverage area
Benefits and Compensation:
The hourly wage is $28.85 + cell stipend. Conditions of Employment:

Travel – This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, in-person training sessions and/or meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed
