Job Summary

The Reinsurance Director provides leadership and oversight for core ceded reinsurance operational activities, ensuring accurate, controlled, and timely reinsurance processing across the department. This role leads a team responsible for reinsurance processing, external reinsurer audits, and captive reinsurance administration, while partnering closely with Reinsurance Operations, Underwriting, Actuarial, Technology, and Accounting/Finance to support financial reporting, operational stability, and data integrity.

The Director serves as the business owner for core reinsurance platforms, including ProCede and related applications, with accountability for system availability, contract setup, automated cession configuration, monitoring and reporting, and reliable downstream data feeds supporting CNA’s financial close. The role also oversees vendor engagement, incident management, access and security controls, and the prioritization and delivery of system enhancements.

Through a combination of people leadership, system ownership, and cross functional partnership, the Director plays a critical role in supporting financial outcomes, regulatory and audit readiness, and the effective operation of reinsurance programs representing over $2B in ceded premiums and recoverables.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leads, and directs the work activities and has full management responsibility for the performance and development of subordinate staff in accordance with corporate strategic directions.

  • Establishes project priorities and initiatives in support of corporate directives, and drives quality assurance of all deliverables.

  • Serves as business owner for core reinsurance systems, including ProCede and related applications, with accountability for contract setup, automated cession configuration, monitoring, reporting, and downstream data feeds supporting financial close.

  • Oversees reinsurance system operations and vendor engagement, including incident management, access and security controls, and prioritization of system enhancements aligned with business and financial reporting needs.

  • Provides leadership and oversight for captive reinsurance administration, including operational processing, reporting, audit support, and coordination with internal stakeholders to ensure accuracy, control, and regulatory compliance

  • Collaborates with business units and corporate finance areas oversees management of financial statement Schedule F and P and other processing.

  • Establishes policies and procedures employing best practices on SOX compliance, in the management of periodic reporting on assumed, ceded treaty and facultative reinsurance.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of finance, reinsurance, underwriting, actuarial and claims principles, practices and procedures.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of internal management and external business partners, departmental staff and other business units.

  • Proven analytical, financial and business management acumen.

  • Knowledge of insurance/reinsurance principles, practices and procedures.

  • Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and problems.

  • Uses creativity in resolving complex and challenging business problems.

  • Achieves business results by taking a proactive short-term (1 to 3 years) view of business goals and objectives.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.

  • Knowledge of ProCede or other business-related software.


Education and Experience

  • Masters degree or equivalent in experience in related discipline.

  • Typically a minimum of ten years of insurance/reinsurance financial experience with a proven track record of results.

  • Applicable designations such as Associate in Reinsurance preferred.

  • Minimum of three years of prior people leadership or management experience.

In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $97,000 to $189,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
