Summary
Provides comprehensive education to inpatients and outpatients with pulmonary disease, as well as performs all respiratory care specialist core modalities. Performs arterial blood gas puncture and performs all diagnostic procedures specific to the patient population.

Job Duties
  • Assists patients with mask refits, questions, concerns, troubleshooting, and other issues relating to compliance; observes equipment function and adjusts equipment to obtain optimum results to therapy.
  • Teaches patients and caregivers how to self-manage pulmonary disease and how to troubleshoot and properly care for their equipment.
  • Observes and documents patient's response to therapy and makes adjustments to the individuals respiratory care plan.
  • Selects, assists in setups, and operates a wide variety of devices such as ventilators, positive pressure machines, blood gas analyzers, aerosol generators, CPAP, BiPAP, Oxygen, Nebulizer, and other pulmonary function equipment.
  • Performs postural drainage and assists patients in performing breathing exercises.
  • Responds to stat-emergency calls such as cardiopulmonary arrests and rapid response by providing assistance within the scope of practice.
  • Participates in monitoring pulmonary patients and records subjective and objective data in patient safety and in aspects of patient care.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree Graduate from a School of Respiratory Therapy accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
  • Ability to perform under stress when confronted with emergency, critical, unusual, or dangerous situation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of patient rights and laws relative to those rights, such as HIPAA.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire
  • AE-C - Certified Asthma Educator NAECB - State of Pennsylvania within 1 Year
  • RRT - Registered Respiratory Therapist NBRC - State of Pennsylvania within 1 Year
  • RCP - Respiratory Care Practitioner - State of Pennsylvania within 1 Year

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree Graduate from a School of Respiratory Therapy accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire
  • RCP - Respiratory Care Practitioner - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire

Physical Demands
Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
