Summary

Focuses upon skin care and prevention of skin breakdown in patients. Facilitates nursing management of patients with acute or chronic wounds and wound vacuum assisted closure (V.A.C) dressing.

Major Job Functions

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job.  The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below.  In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:

  • Provides direct care to patients with needs specific to skin care and acute or chronic wounds

  • Assists in the prevention and management of skin breakdown on a facility-wide basis

  • Participates in product evaluation and research activities related to wound care nursing practice

  • Collaborates with appropriate interdisciplinary staff as necessary to maintain an effective system for cost-effective utilization of specialty beds

  • Provides staff education regarding skin, wound and wound VAC use/maintenance

  • Identifies and assists in opportunities for continuous improvement revenue enhancement

  • Facilitates cost containment

  • Participates in educational and Performance Improvement activities

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

Education and Formal Training

  • Associate’s degree required
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Licensed as Registered Nurse in North Carolina or compact state licensure
  • Maintains certification of wound nurse

Work Experience

  • 3 years of clinical practice experience

  • Wound Care experience highly preferred.

  • WOCN certification preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Articulate and capable of teaching on a one-to-one level and with groups

  • Demonstrated teaching ability

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to see patient's reactions to instruction, lecture (speak), and hear questions from colleagues and patients

  • Ability to transport and manipulate equipment

  • Position may involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material

  • Must be able to lift 35 pounds
