A Brief Overview
Performs a verbal assessment with the patient, family, and/or guardian prior to admission via a phone interview. Collects the patient's medical history from previous medical records. What you will do
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise with regards to age specific populations, including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, and adults
  • Practice appropriate telephone assessment skills, balancing quality work with efficient use of time and resources.
  • Perform appropriate telephone assessment with patient, family, and/or guardian prior to admission, communicating information obtained to appropriate team members.
  • Alert anesthesia team and/or surgeon of lab results, physical assessment, or special needs of the patient with medical problems prior to date of surgery.
  • Communicate pre-operative instructions, arrival time, NPO instructions, and other pertinent information to patients, families, and/or guardians
  • Respond to telephone inquiries regarding expressed needs of the caller in a timely and helpful manner
  • Thoroughly documents all call encounters in an accurate, concise, and timely manner
  • Participate in quality, process, and practice improvement activities as requested
  • Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.

Education/Formal Training Requirements
  • Associate's Degree Nursing- RN
  • Bachelor's Degree Nursing- RN

Work Experience Requirements
  • 1-3 years O.R., SDS, or PACU setting

Licenses and Certifications Requirements
  • Registered Nurse Mississippi - Mississippi Board of Nursing
  • Registered Nurse Tennessee - Tennessee Board of Nursing
  • Registered Nurse Arkansas - Arkansas State Board of Nursing

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Possess good verbal and written communication skills
  • Possess good phone interview assessment, nursing assessment, critical thinking/problem solving, and teaching/counseling skills
  • Possess strong computer skills and experience with electronic medical records
  • Ability to work in a self-directed environment with little supervision
  • Telephone voice/speech pattern is articulate and has a pleasant tone
  • Demonstrate professional demeanor
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Possess organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks to facilitate a smooth flow of the workload

Physical Demands
  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
