The OR Nurse works in accordance with a multidisciplinary team in various roles, including helping set up OR according to type of procedure; circulating the room as the surgeon and trained team operates; transfers patient from pre-procedure to OR and from OR to recovery room.

Requires responsibility for: following and carrying out established operating room standards of care, policies and procedures; understands sterility and proper handling and use of instrumentation, supplies, and equipment.

The RN is responsible for the provision and coordination of patient centered care. The RN coordinates care to achieve desired outcomes, delegates and works cooperatively and collaboratively with ancillary nursing and other members of the healthcare team in maintaining policy and practice standards. The RN is also accountable to practice in accordance with the Michigan Public Health Code Act 368 of 1978, Article 15 (Health Occupations), Part 172 (Nursing). The RN must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and service appropriate to the age of the patients.

Pay Range: $34.00 - $49.18/hour

Employment Type:  Full Time, 72 hours every 2 weeks

Schedule: Monday - Friday 8 hour shifts with the potential for 10 hour shifts, Occasional weeknight night and weekend call with 30 minute response time required

Requirements:  Graduate of accredited Registered Nursing Program required, Current Michigan RN License (or completed by end of orientation) required, Current BLS for the Healthcare Provider (or completed within 60 days of hire) required

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

· Uses established techniques in preparing for and helping set up surgical procedures; provides and sets up necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment for different types of operations, according to established preference cards and instructions of the surgeon. 

· Observes patients during surgical procedures to detect possible complications and/or breaks in sterile technique; able to locate and gather emergency equipment and supplies as needed. 

· As a circulating nurse, places patients in appropriate position(s) to ensure access to the operative field; adjusts operating table and accessory equipment as may be required; prepares operative area and assists surgeon and anesthesia as indicated. 

· Advocates for the patient by communicating with other members of the multidisciplinary team about patient status, and progress of surgical procedure(s) as needed. 

· Observes progress of surgery; provides additional instruments, supplies or other items as needed; provides and regulates fluids as indicated 

· After operation, apply or assist in applying dressings, and transferring patients, from operating room to recovery room.

NURSING PROCESS:

  • ASSESSMENT and DIAGNOSIS -- Collects and documents comprehensive data pertinent to the patient's health or the situation. Assessments are thorough, timely and accurate and include but are not limited to the physiological, socio-cultural, safety and spiritual needs of patients (including significant other). Demonstrates ability to use critical thinking skills to analyze assessment data to determine the pertinent diagnosis or issues. Responds appropriately to changing needs of patients, including response to emergency/life threatening situations.
  • OUTCOMES IDENTIFICATION / PLANNING -- Identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or situation. Develops and documents an individualized plan of care which incorporates the patient's significant other as appropriate and that prescribes strategies and alternatives to attain expected outcomes. Identifies initial and ongoing discharge planning needs. Demonstrates the ability to identify, evaluate and document the patient's response to care given. Coordinates care across the continuum to meet the identified and anticipated needs of the patient and his/her support network.
  • IMPLEMENTATION -- Functions as advocate for patient/significant other. Demonstrates skills needed to implement the identified plan of care, incorporating elements of Standards of Professional Performance (as described in Essential Functions #1) as appropriate. Demonstrates ability to prioritize and adjust priorities based on patient/unit needs.
  • EVALUATION -- Demonstrates ability to evaluate and document patient's progress towards attainment of desired outcomes.


Requirements:
-Graduate of accredited Registered Nursing Program required.
-Bachelor's of Science Nursing (BSN) preferred
-Current Michigan RN License (or completed by end of orientation) required
-Current BLS for the Healthcare Provider (or completed within 60 days of hire) required
