Job Description Summary

The Main Operating Room is within a level three trauma center. There are 9 OR suites which cover all surgical specialties, to include, Trauma, Ortho, ENT, GU-GYN, Robotics, General, Podiatry, Ophthalmology and Urology. The nursing teams consists of 75% Registered Nurses and 25% Certified Surgical Technologist. RN’s are trained to both scrub and circulate surgical procedures. The Main OR is a busy and dynamic nurse driven department that provides cutting-edge technology to the citizens of SC. Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired results.

Scheduled Weekly: 

Hours Per Week: 40                          

Scheduled Work Hours/Shift:  

4 x 10-hour shifts: (6:45a – 5:30p) or

5 x 8-hour shifts: (6:45a – 3:30p) 

This position does have an on-call requirement and is dependent on department need.

Job Summary

Provides circulating and/or scrub nurse services in the operating room during surgical procedures and assists the surgical team as needed in any other capacity according to established process.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from accredited school of nursing. Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. Current RN license in the state of South Carolina. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required. Experience in scrubbing and circulating in the operating room is preferred.

Work Environment:

Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases, contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances.  May be exposed to patient elements including varying and unpredictable situations.  Must be able handle emergency or crisis situations.  Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

No direct supervisory responsibilities but does give direction to nursing assistants.

Financial Responsibilities:

None.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepares the patient for scheduled procedures to assist in patient assessment. 

  • Monitors medical condition of patients and reports changes to the appropriate personnel.

  • Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to assure optimal patient care. 

  • Assists physicians with examinations, procedures related to direct patient care.  Has knowledge of all equipment, procedures and can instruct and precept personnel.

  • Writes initial nursing histories, assesses patient conditions and develops individual care plans for patients in the OR.

  • Demonstrates sensitivity to patients’ comfort and privacy and maintains a safe, therapeutic and comfortable environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards.

  • Orients, trains and instructs assigned personnel. 

  • Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental objectives and maintain good employee objectives.

  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording of patient medical records maintaining all required reports, records and statistics.

  • Performs other miscellaneous and related duties as assigned. 

  • Have knowledge of ADRN standards and practices.

Physical Requirements:

Physical requirements are primarily related to the essential functions of any job. In order to perform the essential functions of this position, you must be able to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, talk, hear and smell.

Must be able to lift or exert energy up to 50 pounds 100% of the time.

Close vision (clear vision at 20 “ or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 ft or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen move up/down or left/right), depth vision (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into focus) are required.

Mental Requirements:

Must possess the ability to read, analyze and interpret complex scientific, clinical or business journals, financial reports or legal documents. Ability to respond to sensitive inquiries or complaints from guests, regulatory agencies, staff and members of the business community. Ability to write persuasive correspondence, speeches and articles for publication. Ability to effectively present information to top management, large public groups, and boards of directors.

Must possess the ability to perform more complex math functions (add, subtract, multiply and divide) to include calculating percentages, averages, volume, ratio and interpreting graphs - using numbers, money and units of measurement. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to deal with concrete and abstract concepts and interpret verbal, nonverbal and written instructions.

Age Groups:

This position primarily interacts with all age groups and provides direct patient care. All staff members must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to meet the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related needs of the persons in the assigned work area.

Additional Job Description

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date. Refer to policy A141 for more details. A minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required. Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state.  Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.

Physical Requirements:

1. Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
2. Proficiency in manual dexterity and fine motor skills for tasks such as taking patient vitals, administering injections, or conducting physical exams.
3. Capacity to lift and move patients or medical equipment as needed.
4. Visual acuity and color perception to accurately read medical charts, documents, and monitors.
5. Auditory ability to effectively communicate with patients and colleagues, as well as to perceive important sounds such as alarms or patient instructions.
6. Stamina and resilience to handle the physical and emotional demands of providing patient care, including long shifts and potentially stressful situations.
7. Mobility to navigate clinical environments, including moving between patient rooms, offices, and other areas of the facility.
8. Compliance with infection control protocols and proper use of personal protective equipment to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
