Position Summary:
The Inpatient Diabetes Educator, RN provides expert clinical guidance, education, and consultation for hospitalized patients with diabetes and related endocrine disorders. This role supports both direct and indirect patient care through staff education, individualized patient teaching, interdisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based practice. The educator serves as a hospital-wide resource and clinical leader for diabetes management and works closely with providers, nursing staff, and ancillary teams to ensure safe, effective, and coordinated care across the continuum.
Minimum Requirements:
Current RN license in the State of Washington.
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required; Master’s preferred.
Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES/CDE) credential required (or obtained within 6 months of hire).
Recent acute care and clinical experience in diabetes education/clinic or endocrinology preferred.
Current BLS certification.
Proficiency in EMR documentation (Epic experience preferred).
Key Responsibilities:
Conducts individualized diabetes education for inpatients and their families, focusing on disease understanding, medication management, insulin administration, nutrition, blood glucose monitoring, and discharge planning.
Collaborates with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing, dietitians, and pharmacists to optimize glycemic control and reduce complications.
Reviews and updates patient diabetes education materials and clinical protocols in alignment with ADA and hospital standards.
Provides consultative support to nursing and medical staff regarding complex diabetes management, including insulin pump and CGM utilization.
Leads and participates in quality improvement initiatives related to glycemic management, hypoglycemia prevention, and transitions of care.
Collects, tracks, and reports data on key performance indicators (e.g., hypoglycemia rates, insulin protocol compliance, patient education completion).
Educates and mentors nursing staff and new hires on inpatient diabetes care best practices.
Serves as a liaison between inpatient and outpatient diabetes programs to ensure continuity of care post-discharge.
Participates in hospital committees focused on quality, safety, and patient outcomes as related to endocrine care.
Maintains required documentation within the EMR in accordance with hospital policy and regulatory standards.

Strong interpersonal and teaching skills, with the ability to educate patients and staff effectively.
Advanced clinical judgment in managing complex diabetic cases in the acute care setting.
Ability to analyze and interpret glucose management data to guide care improvement.
Knowledge of ADA standards, Joint Commission requirements, and inpatient glycemic control protocols.
Strong collaboration and leadership skills with a multidisciplinary focus.
Working Conditions:
Hospital inpatient environment; direct patient care and educational settings.
Frequent interaction with patients, families, nursing staff, and providers across multiple departments.
May have rotating weekend requirements

As required by various pay transparency laws, we share a competitive range of compensation for candidates hired into each position. The pay scale is $112,674.00 - $183,810.00 USD. However, pay is influenced by factors specific to applicants, including but not limited to: skill set, level of experience, and certification(s) and/or education.
