This position is a time limited educational experience to introduce the new graduate registered nurse to nursing practice from multiple perspectives through didactic, clinical and experiential opportunities. Participates in all didactic sessions as part of the role, as well as learning to participate in the planning, delivery and management of direct patient care utilizing the nursing process and adhering to the standards of nursing practice.

I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Proactively identifies own learning needs as well as identifying potential opportunities to meet those needs.
2. Participates in self evaluation through out the residency process.
3. Attends and participates in all didactic sessions offered through the Department of Professional Development for the program.
4. Completes preparation for didactic and clinical experiences through reading and research as assigned.
5. Participates in utilization of learning resources including library time, preceptor support and nurse educator supervision.
6. Demonstrates knowledge of the Nursing Process for the delivery and management of patient’s care from Admission through Discharge, appropriate to the developmental age of the patient population.
7. Reviews and practices the components of comprehensive patient care, from admission though discharge, with the goal of being able to perform independently by the conclusion of residency.
8. Learns and demonstrates skills for appropriate patient assessment/reassessment. 
9. Demonstrates nursing judgment appropriate to respond to results of assessment/reassessment.
10. Demonstrates ability to independently develop individual plan of care including discharge planning.  Links development of plan of care directly to assessment/reassessment activity.
11. Learns to identify appropriate delegation criteria as related to job criteria, patient condition and facility resources.
12. Learns and demonstrates appropriate patient care documentation using a variety of modalities within accordance of facility policy and procedure.
13. Learns to develop Education Plan for patient/family/ significant other. Implements/coordinates plan with supervision and assistance. Demonstrates appropriate documentation of Education plan.
14. Gains skill in collaborative processes to promote patient care as part of a health care team approach.
15. Expands knowledge of pharmacology including medication administration safety, through didactic and clinical experience.  Identifies and utilizes appropriate resources for safe and effective medication administration.
16. Demonstrates safe and effective medication administration practices in accordance with UMass Memorial policy and procedure.
17. Gains knowledge and experience with selected treatments, therapies and equipment through precepted rotation and selected unit/specialty area assignments.
18. Observes process of Nursing Governance at UMass Memorial. 
19. Learns about performance improvement initiatives through didactic programs and observation.
20. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
21. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed.
22. Demonstrates use of quality improvement in daily operations.
23. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
24. Respects diverse views and approaches, and contributes in maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
25. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Completion of an accredited school of nursing program. 
2. Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse licensure and registration required.  

Preferred:
1. BSN preferred.

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Beginning knowledge of the discipline of Nursing.  

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements, will be developed and maintained in the individual departments.  The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description.  Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Position requires work indoors in a patient care environment.
 

Schedule Details:

4 mixed 12 hour shifts per month

7am - 7:30pm OR 7pm - 7:30am

One major Summer and Winter holiday

4 shifts per month required - one weekend /month. One major summer/winter holiday
