KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
80% Patient Care Activities
• Providing all types of nutritional care/interventions (screens, assessments and follow ups), as part of a managed care team, from basic nutrition, to patients with highly specialize needs including - a level one trauma center, psychiatric unit, Arkansas state stroke pathway, multiple myeloma, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), transplant patients, cystic fibrosis, neuromuscular and genetic disorders, high risk pregnancy, eating disorders, phenylketonuria (PKU), among others and maintaining documentation in the medical record.
• Teaching and educating patients and family on diets such a diabetes, congestive heart failure, renal disease, liver/kidney transplant, weight loss, stem cell transplant, stroke, cardiac health, healthy diet during pregnancy and lactation etc. The Clinical Dietitian is also expected to provide nutrition support education for all new feeding tube placements (PEG, Jtube, DHT).
• The clinical dietitian will act as a resource to other health care providers by participating in multidisciplinary daily rounds (SICU, MICU, liver kidney transplant, stem cell transplant, NICU etc.) and/or by attending daily multidisciplinary CHAT/discharge planning meetings.
• The clinical dietitian has an advanced level of knowledge in malnutrition with the ability to perform hands on Nutrition focused physical assessments to diagnose patients with malnutrition (and vitamin/mineral deficiencies based on physical presentation) which improves revenue/reimbursement for the hospital.
• The clinical dietitian has ordering writing privileges. Responsibilities include ordering/managing Enteral Nutrition while in the hospital, for discharge, and at home. Responsibilities also include ordering/managing Parenteral Nutrition while in the hospital, managing home TPN, ordering pertinent labs (renal chem 10, triglycerides, albumin, prealbumin), and ordering electrolyte replacements as needed. The Registered dietitian will also be responsible for ordering protein modulars, prebiotics, oral diets, oral supplements, pancreatic enzymes and vitamin/minerals for cystic fibrosis, and managing of vitamin/minerals in the neonate.
20% Student Education, Clerical duties and Presentations
• UAMS is a teaching hospital. As such, the clinical dietitian is expected to serve as a preceptor to dietetic students and act a nutritional resource to staff (allied health, nursing, physicians, medical students) by completing in services and being available by phone, pager, or vocera to answer questions. In addition to educating students and faculty, the clinical dietitian will be involved in and manage multidisciplinary research projects and grants. The clinical dietitian will establish nutritional protocols as needed for ongoing research and grant funding.
• The clinical dietitian will be responsible for conducting monthly continuous quality improvement (CQI) by conducting peer reviewed chart audits. He/she will also be expected to complete individual bi-weekly and month productivity reports. The clinical dietitian is also responsible for conducting continuous quality improvement within their specialty teams, i.e. FACTS, Stem cell transplant, Cystic Fibrosis, NICU etc. Presentations outside the hospital as required.
