Position Summary
Value Chain Optimization (VCO) has an opening for the position of Refining Planning and Economics Manager in its Planning & Economics group within the Detroit Refinery. This position will report directly to the Value Chain Optimization Director – North and will be responsible for planning, managing, and directing Engineers and Schedulers in production planning and scheduling, economic evaluations, and optimization of refinery performance.
This role requires extensive collaboration with other departments, organizations, and third parties, demanding strong interpersonal and communication skills. Additional responsibilities include implementing and providing guidance on corporate and refinery-wide directives and goals; driving efficiency improvements and effective resource management; and evaluating and fostering the technical and career development of direct reports.
Key Responsibilities
Helps manage the commercial aspects of regional refinery operations, including feedstock selection, product and intermediate placement, supply chain optimization, and market analysis.
Directs local refinery planning team in optimization of the refinery’s feed and product slate and operations to maximize refinery profitability. Responsible for the creation and implementation of the short-term production plan.
Supports and advises engineers and schedulers on modifying operating plans in response to capacity limitations, product quality, constraints, and equipment failures. Includes the regional planning teams in communication of operating limitations as listed above.
Provides group personnel with the necessary tools and resources to accomplish department goals, including engaging other MPC divisions to facilitate resolution of complex issues.
Works closely with VCO leadership and other stakeholders to minimize customer supply disruptions and maximize profitability for MPC. Drives value addition for the refinery and considers the best value case for the entire region.
Communicates expectations to personnel, evaluates individual performance versus expectations to determine the areas of strength and opportunities for improvement and appraises personnel of their performance status in a timely manner.
Prepares status and progress reports for management and communicates accomplishments and concerns to management.
Coaches and mentors team members in development of communication and interpersonal skills of personnel so that appropriate work relationships can be developed with customers, contractors, and other work associates.
Develops and manages a training plan using work assignments and training opportunities to continuously improve technical skills. Participates in necessary refinery safety training and programs.
Participates in the management of department staffing, including recruiting interviewing and selection of candidates.
Serves as the focal point of communication between the Refinery Leadership Team and the VCO Organization. Responsible for communication of economic drivers and strategic planning objectives with other local refinery departments.
Works with Regional Planning team to provide insight to TAR planning and project economics, as necessary.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline required.
Five (5) years of refining experience in Technical Services, Commercial and/or Economics & Planning required.
