Recreation Program Coordinator - Youth Athletics

The job description does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change at any time by the employer.  Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Plans, implements, supervises, promotes, develops, markets, and evaluates recreation programs. Programs are often large-scale in nature and require coordination of various stakeholders such as swim meets, youth/adult games and tournaments, and special event rentals.

  • Coordinates and communicates with not only the direct recipient of the program, but also third parties, including participant supporters, attendees, volunteers, and vendors.

  • Interacts with public and staff daily; responds to inquiries, addresses complaints, grievances, and emergency issues; assists patrons as needed.

  • Serves as liaison and works with community organizations and volunteer associations concerning current, proposed and future utilization, development, improvement and expansion of the City’s programs, services and activities.

  • Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate assigned staff such as sports officials for youth and adult athletic programs, seasonal camp staff, or volunteers.

  • Responsible for contract payroll.

  • Schedules facilities and appropriate activity supervision for programs in and outside of the recreation center.

  • Keeps inventory and maintains equipment for assigned programs.

  • Set up/take down for programs; update schedules and standings as needed.

  • Assists with front desk responsibilities, including program registration, booking for programs and facilities, equipment check-out and cash handling.

  • Conducts tours of facility and athletic sites.

  • Enforces adherence to safety and behavioral rules; performs CPR/First Aid as required.

  • Assists at special events within the department.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required. 

SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS ATHLETICS SERVICE AREA:  

  • Oversees and assists with program registration regarding lessons, leagues, camps, and tournaments, including class changes, cancellations, and refunds.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, training and Experience Guidelines

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Recreation, Kinesiology, Physical Education, or a related field. Three (3) years of full-time experience in recreation programming. One (1) year of experience must be related to the assigned programming. OR a combination of experience, education and/or training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge of:

  • Recreation and leisure activities programming related to youth and adult athletics.

  • Recreation program design, administration, and evaluation.

  • Supervisory and management principles and practices.

  • Basic Rules and regulations for amateur athletics, games and competitions, including Texas Amateur Athletic Foundation (TAAF) standards and Amateur Softball Association (ASA).

  • Recreation risk management principles.

  • City policies and procedures.

Skill in:

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

  • Using computers and software applications. 

  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Resolving customer complaints and concerns.

  • Reading journals, memos and other documents.

  • Writing letters, memos, reports, instructions, and promotional material and other correspondence.

  • Performing basic mathematical calculations; budget management.

  • Analyzing statistical data; interpreting policies, procedures, and City ordinances.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Class "C" Texas driver’s license required. Out-of-state license holders must have a valid license and provide a three-year driving history.

  • CPR and First Aid Certifications or ability to obtain within the first six (6) months of employment.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION PREFERRED 

  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP)

  • Certified Parks and Recreation Executive (CPRE)

  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls.

Chemicals and recreation equipment; outdoor environment.

Work hours at times will exceed the norms to ensure the successful completion of tasks related to program or events.

Hiring Range: $51,189.32 - $64,126.40, annually.
